Does anyone have "tire flies"

At least I think thats what they are called. A friend passed a bike that had them on the other day and said he thought they looked pretty good. I think they might look pretty cool, but even more so it seems like they would make you stand out at night, which seems like it could make night riding safer. I heard at one point they were illegal, not sure why, but then I heard that certain colors were legal. What is your opinion on them? They are the blinking lights that hook up to the wheels.

Dont quote me on this but this is just what I heard, I was told that the weight of the light on the valve stem and the force of the wheel spinning would sometimes bend the valve stem and damage it.

On the other hand I think it would be another good item to make you stand out though.

if it doesn't make it faster or give it better handling why bother? Stickers are still 5hp each. Lights=0hp

I'm all about posing, it's not about how fast my bike can go, but how fast it looks like it can go! No, I dont think it would make it look much better or worse, but I like anything that makes bike stand out at night. Just my 2 cents.

I had them on my scooter...I figured anything that would add more visibility would be a good thing. Plus, the scooter didn't go fast enough to warrant valve-stem failure

Seriously... can anyone provide REAL documentated cases of Valve Stem damage/failure due to the various valve stem caps?

There's actually evidence of just plain metal caps causing valve stem damage. Last year at the track I was talking to the Michelin man and he said if you have rubber stems, you should never run anything but the light plastic caps. He said the forces created from spinning can cause a valve stem to bend 90 degrees w/ just a metal cap. He also stressed to every one who might be running the pressure alert caps to ditch them immediately...

I have SEEN with my own eyes someone get a flat at a high rate of speed b/c their valve stem broke due to the "skull type" valve stem cap...lucky for him, he didn't go down....for me, I'll put what the manufacturer puts on the valve stem and take my chances on being "cool" without putting myself in danger.
