Ninja 250R First Bike?

I took the MSF course about a 2 years back and completed it. I now have my M class license . I still have not bought my first bike but I'm planning on doing it soon. My question to yall was, would it be a good idea to get a new bike as a first bike? I was considering if I would be able to get a hold of the 2008 Ninja 250R, then I should go ahead and have that bike as a first bike. Is it that bad of an idea to get a new bike for a first bike than a used one?

I also want to start off on a 250cc class bike so I can feel comfortable, and not be terrified with a stronger bike.

I think it's a great idea! 250 is a perfect starting bike. But some frame sliders on it, and make a few adjustments. I would def look into it. Good luck getting your hands on one right away though!

It all comes down to your budget and how important having the more modern looking 250 is to you.
If you buy new, your going to spend more initially. And should you drop it, finding used parts will be difficult and you will likely have to buy new.
Theres not any real significant improvement over the older 250's performance wise. They actually gained a few pounds on the new model.
You'll have just as much fun on either bike. If it's something you plan to keep for a while, and money's not that big of an issue, get the '08 if you like it.

Good call to go 250. I'd start off used, just in case you drop it. And if you don't drop it, you can probably sell it for not much less than you paid for it (maybe even break even)!

There's a couple of used ones on sale right here on MH:

I love the new 250's i think it's a great choice, if they would have already been out in November I probably have ended up with one of those instead of my 650. I'd go for it!

seeing as you havnt been on a bike in a while, i would get hooked up with a used 250 so you can trash it out without having to worry about it looking ugly. i mean, they already look ugly!

get your 250 used ... tonnes on CG and I think someone here is trying to sell one too. Not everyone drops their first bike, but I think the odds are against you enough that you should consider getting a used bike first, then think about getting something new on your second bike.

WRONG about insurance, We pay three times as much for the ninja 250 than the 1098? WTF is up with that, they told me ALL ninja 250,s get wrecked some the day they are bought, beginners bike = very high risk of damage, might wanna check b4 u buy, but yes the 250 is a great bike and hauls just takes awhile to get there and gets 70 mpg

I pay 89 bucks for the year to insure mine ... but it's just collision and liability ... no theft.

IMHO ... just buy something that you will not be financing. If you can buy the 08 kawi 250 cash, then yeah ... you just don't want to wreck something that you are going to still be paying on while its sitting in your garage unusable!
