Tire question

I've got almost 8k miles on my Metzeler Z6 tires. They're firm rubber (sport touring, i guess) so I'm not sure how many more miles I should get out of them.

I have a nice little flat spot, but nothing that interferes with the handling of the bike. When should I be concerned about getting some new ones? Any suggestions on a better sport touring tire? (though I can't really complain about the z6 )

TIA

8k miles its about time for a new rear at least. i managed to squeeze 8k out of my first rear tire before it started showing thread, but that much miles is ALOT for our kind of bikes. dunno anything about metzlers, but id assume theyre pretty comparable to battlax's given that they came from teh factory. i got about 12k out of my first front tire.

well its not showing any thread... honestly I dont think it will be showing any time soon, i'm just worried about my ability to throw around a 500 lb bike on a tire with that many miles.

i guess ill ride it til it blocks off or starts to get ugly! then its burn out time i suppose... ?

if you look at the tread there are little "raised" spots inside a few of the grooves...when those are flush it is about that time...if you cant see what im talkin about get a tread depth gauge and the same that applies to car tires goes for the bike (anything under 3/32 should be replaced)

with that said i have ridden til the threads show, just cant really ride as aggressive once it gets past the point above

You said it hasn't affected handling, but you might be surprised. Every time I put new tires on a bike it feels brand new again.
8,000 miles is pretty good for a rear, but if it still has tread and you feel like it's not too flat down the middle, it's still good to go.
When it's time to replace it go see Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited, they will take good care of you and he offers discounts for MH members.

the z6 is a sport touring tire... it is designed to last long. I loved mine I had on the rc and when the tires wear away I will be going that route on the busa. personally I am going with the sport front(m3) and z6 rear. just beware now that it is cold it takes the z6 forever to warm up so traction will not be that great. especially when it is cold and raining, I had a track day in 37F while raining and the rc kept spinning up the rear tire, never lost corner traction though.

I would look into replacing any tire once it reaches the wear bars.

the wear bars on a z6 look different... there is no tread grooves across the center contact patch on it. the tread is on the sides. my z6 squared off way before I even got close to wearing out the tread.

Chris,
The Z6 on your bike probably still has some more good usuable life to it.
If you're concerned about it though, swing by the shop next time you're in town for a visit and we'll look at it, or e-mail me some pics if you can.

Most of my customers have had good results running the M3 front and Z6 rear combo.

Some of my more aggressive guys have tried the Pilot Road 2ct and the Pilot Power front with really great results.

It's what I'm currently running myself, and couldn't be happier.

here are some pics of the tires in question...

IIRC i got them at 7400mi and i'm at 15.8k now.

witchdoctor, that is what i'm concerned about. it's really hard to tell about the groves since they dont cross the center. anyway, take a look and tell me what you think.

Looks like you can get some more mileage out of them, but fresh rubber is always good. I like the M3's myself.
