For my ladies

Chronicles Of Chrome
(throttles, tires and tailpipes)
Riding From A Women's View.
BY: Michelle Gasaway

Have you ever been sitting at a red light on a warm spring day with your windows rolled down when suddenly you hear an engine rev? Then the rumble of tailpipes? You look around. First left, then right, then in your rear view mirror. There it is! Rolling up behind you in the left hand lane. A smoking hot paint job with chrome so bright the reflection of the sun is blinding. You stare with your mouth gaping wide. Your eyes stretch to the limits as it draws nearer. Your gaze follows the slow creep of the tires as your ears sway to the music of the grumbling engine.

Finally, the beast rests in the lane next to you. Your eyes are drawn to it like a moth to a flame. As you bask in the sheer beauty of it, you notice the hip graphics of the flat black helmet and skulls all the way down to the…the pony tail! That’s right! It’s a…a woman! And she is riding that bad boy all by herself!

Today women motorcycle enthusiasts are becoming more common. For the most part they are good for the motorcycle culture. They naturally love to accessorize, therefore, making modifications and purchasing upgrades to make their bike look and perform better. They bring a different perspective to the sport than men. Typically men are more competitive. If their buddy Mike blows past them, they want to blow past him. Women just want to ride. They don’t care how they get there or how long it takes just as long as they get there on two wheels. Women ride as if they have no cares and they feel like more of an individual. Neither men nor women ride for anyone other than themselves. They do it because it calls to something inside of them. It is a thrill that is almost impossible to match!

Some men would argue that women riders are much better than men; for the simple fact that they have better balance. In fact, most men welcome the opportunity to ride behind a woman for more reasons than just the view! Women are also more careful and attentive to road conditions and hazards. Because they are under a microscope by the men, women try to hone their riding skills to a finer point. They practice starting, stopping, cornering and being more aware of their surroundings. Women also find that they gain the respect of male drivers more when they ride their own machine.

You may ask, “What kind of woman rides a motorcycle?”

Many types of women ride. Homemakers, mothers, teachers, accountants, and even grandmothers enjoy the freedom of riding. The old stereotype of the “biker babe” is in the past. Today’s female riders wear leather jackets and chaps for protection more than fashion; although, the appeal is not left in the dust. Not all women riders are a model size 5 either. It doesn’t make you “tough” to ride just as it does not make you trashy or a bad . Some still get discerning looks and comments from non-riders. The number one comment from women who don’t ride, “Aren’t you scared to ride that thing all by yourself?” our answer is, “Aren’t you scared to drive your car all by yourself?”
