Will I be ok at the track?

A friend of mine has been wanting to get his racing liscense through LSTD so he can go do Oak Hill, it's close to us, on the weekends without a trackday. I'd also like to get mine but I've never been to the track and the trackday on Feb. 22 won't have a beginners group. We're going to have to run in the B group.

So I guess my question is, do ya'll think I'll be ok on that day if I know my limits and don't push it too hard or should I go to a trackday that has a beginners group? I don't want to be a hassle to anyone or be in the way.

I have about 7k miles on my bike last year and think I'm a decent rider, no kneedragging or anything, but have a head on my shoulders and use it.

Thanks, 07CBR

I've been riding on the street for over 20 years on a series of fast bikes.... Busa, ZX-11, Vmax, etc. My experience included street racing and canyon riding (racing??) in the Colorado Rockies. I just started riding on the track and I can tell you there is little comparison to riding on the street. Braking, in particular, is an eye opening experience as is having somebody pass you in a corner dragging a knee going 50% faster than you.

If there is any way to go to a Noob track day before you jump in with the fast people, I think you'd enjoy the experience much more.

If you've not yet read Twist of the Wrist II by Keith Code, pick it up and read it in advance of your track day.

And, drop by a good motorcycle shop (Motorcycles Unlimited) and have them set up your suspension for your body weight. It's fast, cheap, and really helps. Consider racing pads on the front and new brake fluid if you've not changed it in a while.

The Grandsport trackday should be a good "noob" day also

John

thus why I recommend he does a n00b only day. Normal LMS is fun but directed for people that have participated at a few track days already. I would recommend the LSTD group first.

I DO NOT suggest Oak Hill be your very first time on a track. Grandsport speedway is geared more for the beginner type.

Have any noobs taken advantage of the $500 Private Lessons by Larry at Longhorn? Is it worthwhile for noobies, or better suited for experienced trackday riders? At least we won't have to wait until the next noob day! I'm really feeling the itch to do trackdays, now that Patrick is completely upgrading my bike's suspension, and I don't know if I can wait another 1-1/2 to 2 months!!

Honestly as a first time no. I'd save that extra cash and purchase an extra set of tires.

So Grand Sport Speedway is a good beginner track to start on. Im really interested in doing this one, so group C is for beginners...is there onsite instruction as well or do you need to take the class to get that kinda attention?

Larry is plenty fast as a rider and can teach you tons of stuff, but i'd prolly get a couple trackdays under your belt before moving to Larry's help.. just so that you can get a feel for the "basics" of track riding, before you learn your bad habits, let larry teach you some good ones.

You do not have to have a license to run Oak Hill at our track days. However, we will not have a "c" group that day, and for that, I would say run the Grand Sport Speedway day on the 16th of February.

It will be a great way to introduce you to the track, and they'll be plenty of instructors on hand to help you if you want to take the course.

If nothing else, I'll get out there with you for a few laps to provide some critique if you like

If you can pony up the $500, I'd do it as a noob. You'll have the track basically to yourself for an entire day as well as dedicated instruction from Larry.
