while $5 or $7.5 won't support a family. i think most people don't have a prob. w/ helping people out for a short time "if they're down on their luck" i think it's the lifetime welfare freeloaders we all have a issue w/ .

Dave, how long was your dad out of work?

and Hornet sounds like he's a product of this current oil boom, hint: it doesn't last forever. and if you by yourself can't live off of $40k, you'll have alot more prob's when oil goes down and if you have family even worse.

for a guy making so much $, you can't even afford a decent bike, and live in a complex that gets broken into alot........lol

Margin tax will pack punch
State is likely to collect more than double the franchise levy

When the new Texas margin tax kicks in this year, many businesses will get hit with a surprise tax bill costing them several thousand dollars.

Under a new state law that replaces the franchise tax with a margin tax, businesses will pay based on gross revenues. The number of companies paying taxes will rise to 900,000 in May 2008 from 700,000 in 2007. The amount of state business taxes paid is expected to more than double to $11.9 billion during the next two years versus $5.7 billion for the last two-year period under the outgoing franchise tax, according to the Texas Comptroller's Office........

""A lot of taxpayers will be caught off guard by their new tax liability," said Clint Munsell, a certified public accountant at Sol Schwartz & Associates in San Antonio."

If you're having a hard time making more, then you're not doing it right... At this moment LESS than one weeks pay will cover every bill + living and fun in my entire household. You may now.

anyone know of a free online tax preperation service for someone making more than 40K??? I tried TaxACT, but had no success actually filing, just preparing the taxes...their software or whatever isn't ready until sometime this month.

It is not how much you make that defines you as a person

What I meant was, I wouldn't consider $40K to be 'low income'.

Think of a single income family where 1 person works the other cares for the kids say a family of four now divide this 40,000 before tax income over the family less than 10,000 per person per year... Or a single family home 1 parent 3 kids....

You are thinking in terms of a single person making $40,000 perhaps and for that one individual would not be considered low income

Of course that wouldn't be much for a family. The site didn't say that it had to be a family though. It said 'persons'.

At any rate - Seems like 'low income' should be the last people getting their taxes done for free. Aren't they actually paying in less than anyone else?
