Email from a guy I chat with on another board:

The city is gone and isn't coming back. If is does rebuild, NO will be considerably smaller than what it is now. We have been allowed to go back to NO on Monday for two hours under police escort, and authorities have told us to arm ourselves as well. We're going to the family home to take out what keepsakes we can and come back home here in Texas. We have been told not to come back.

In talking with relatives on the ground there, it is a lot worse than is being shown on TV. Fully armed stree gangs are shooting at police and emergency personnel. The NG has been told to treat NO as a war zone and if they are fired upon, to return fire. Evidently NO had a big gang problem and now the gangs are using this event to even scores.......no one is safe.

FYI. . . we just had around 800 people from one of the projects down in N.O. dropped off here in my city, Monroe (northeast corner of La.) and they were to have been de-contaminated.* They didn't want to be decontaminated and fought.* We've brought in all auxiliary peeps that we can so far and it's horrible.* Our civic center is filled to capacity. . . our hospitals are becoming crowded.* Those that didn't want to be decontaminated got sent on to Shreveport, which is about 1 1/2 hours away.* Hopefully Shreveport can do something with that bunch.* And another 800 are on there way. . . .:shake
while i wish these people were contained. it would unethical to do so.......and if we did i guarantee they would riot and mayhem......

Re: problems are getting worse and worse

I think that the government has all of the volunteers they need. The way I see it, the people they bus out of N.O., need to be bused back to rebuild THIER city. Plenty of labor. In stead of taking our jobs, and sitting on thier complaining that things aren't being done, let them, with the assistance of the feds, rebuild thier city!!!!!! Provide them with the neccesities they need. Do like HUD does. If you want a house, you must builds your nieghbors!!!!!

In the words of the Water Boy, YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!

even the cops are "looting". i think most of the looting is survival based, and of course there are people trying to capitalize off of the situation, but it won't be long before they are trying to surive too.

Bush - "I think there ought to be zero tolerance of people breaking the law during an emergency such as this,". That seems a little heartless, considering taking food and water out of a store is still considered illegal, but I don't think anyone is taking that seriously.

i think this is ridicuolous..... i would expect this from a 3rd world country that has never had a sence of government. but not from Americans.

I still think that if this had happened to Houston, Houstonians wouldn't react like the people from New Orleans... But ya'll check this out.. I went to a meeting a while back before the hurricane season started. A storm expert said that if a Catagory 5 was to hit Houston/Galveston head on. The storm surge, the rain and flooding would take out from the Seawall all the way up to Pasadena.

You might be suprised Guero. Survival is one thing. However, there are a lot of ignorant dumbasses in Houston as well. It's not the middle to upper class that are behaving this way. Need I say more? Houston has it's fair share of ghettos too.
People are up, no matter what city you live in. When there is a feeling of lawlessness, or that you can get away with anything, or even that there is no structure, behavior radically changes.
I say, drop a bomb in there now and then rebuild. Nothing there is worth salvaging anyway. Seeing as it has ALL been contaminated, bulldoze it, use the rubble as back fill, then rebuild. Now your city isn't below sea level!!!!
