A guy I work with has a family that opened a resort in CR where you can swim with whalesharks or some BS. Anyway, they have problems keeping the resort open due to local corruption in the gov'n.

Def. check out the Pacific side. Look at the Guanacaste peninsula, but stay away from the northern, touristy part.

I love Nosara - surfer paradise.

Lots there were a lot more expensive than I thought though.

Check out harbor reef lodge in Nosara. They have a cool little hotel, but the way to go is to rent a house from them for a week. They don't allow construction on the beachfront, so all the houses are built just off the beach in the jungle - really cool. They also have a couple of houses to rent up on the hillside and they look really sweet.

Go down, rent a house, spend a week and look around. If you go in the off (rainy) season, it's MUCH cheaper to stay, there aren't nearly as many people - you'll have mile long beaches to yourself, and it's much cooler. It really only rains a couple of times a day.
