Helmet's models

I'm looking for a new helmet, specifically SHOEI, but I came to realize that SHOEI has different designs for US market and Japan market. Although I like the domestic models I found a japanese design that I like but not sure if I should go on with the purchase because of specifications. The model is SNELL2005 approved while in house models are DOT/SNELL approved.
Can somebody explain the difference? Will I be able to use that helmet on a track or on the street without any regulations/laws problem?
Much appreciated the help

Go to an outlaw harley shop. Those places sell these little beenie helmets that are not certified.
They will give/sell you a little sticker that says DOT. Not D.O.T. just DOT.
That's all you need. Put it on the back of the helmet and POOF it's legal.

Been there done that. Most Popos never check for certification anyway, and I never have had a track official look.
Both groups are happy ya got the dang thing on.
