And, please let us not forget that officers' duty is not just writing tickets and catching bike thieves.
You really should not stereotype the whole LE community with your experience on traffic violation cases.
As a retailer, I really can appreciate POs trying make differences in our daily lives in many different situations.
I make a donation to 'the 100 club' every year, and wish more ppl would too.
I understand not every POs are perfect but, neither are any of us.
Whatever you'r job may be (merchants, doctors, lawyers*gasp*), I'm sure some of us had bad experiences with you too.

OK, how would you catch a bike theft ring then? It's OK for people to just randomly take things that aren't tied down properly?

99 times of 100 the bikes aren't just "laying around" unlocked or something- bike locks get cut all the time too!

You keep dodging the question: Where is your source that says the department paid $3k for the bike? What is the big deal using an expensive bike? You think a rusty Huffy from 1979 is going to get stolen?

Denhou1974... U really need to look up the defenition entrapment... meer opportunity is NOT entrapment... example... the bike is just sitting there ( that is just opportunity )
the bike is sitting there and an undercover cop asks you to please steal it,sell it and give him the money bc his dying mother needs a heart transplant ... you tell him No but he starts to cry and says to you that without this she will die in no time... against your better judgement you steal it... thats entrapment...

All cops are asshats and should be punished accordingly...

And all bikers are squidly criminals who just stunt and race and run on stolen bikes...

That makes sense, right? Some of you will get the point, some of you will not...

some people say if it isn't yours leave it alone, and to a point its true... so if you find a dollar... even a quarter on the ground, would you pick it up? You right you would... It's not yours, so are you a criminal now because you took something that wasn't yours? are you trash because you picked up that quarter? should you leave it there because you expect the owner to come back for it? I know its not as much as a bicycle, but the price doesn't matter, it's the principle behind it.

I'm just questioning some of the statements being made on here that IMO are pretty far out. That is all

Change on the ground, stealing a bike from a corner?
What is the difference in your words?

So do wallets and credit cards. Not a good comparison.

There is a difference between right and wrong. Most people understand, some just don't care. Others just want to argue.

You talk about common sense, and then display a complete lack of it again.
Look at your first paragraph I quoted and think about it for awhile. YOU asked me to justify it and I explained parameters that would be needed in order to attempt to justify it.

This is one of those Common Sense things.. (It would seem the term COMMON SENSE is really an oxymoron in this thread).

You have never picked up something that doesn't belong to you that you found while walking along in a public place?
It's yours if they can't prove the rightful owner.

I will be replying to the kid statement in just a few more posts...
