Rookie member, be gentle......

Hi Guys & Gals,
I've joined this forum so I can learn/pickup tips mostly about the trackday scene in Texas and particularly around Houston.
I currently live in the UK, about 25 mins outside of London but hope to be immigrating to Houston, Texas in 2008.

I’ve been riding motorbikes for around 25 years now, everything from small two stroke 125s to a GSXR1000 K6 most lately with all sorts thrown in-between.

I’ve done the touring bit, breakfast rides, club meets, street sprints although the last few years have seen me move away from road riding to take in the track day thing.

Here’s a bit about me and bikes for this introduction section;

Current bike: Suzuki GSXR1000 K6
Best track bike ridden: 2006 Kawasaki ZX6RR SuperSport Spec Race bike .
Most disappointing bike: YZF1000 ThunderAce, GPZ1000RX
Scariest bike ridden: 2005 Kwacka ZX10R Race bike ( harder you turned the throttle the quicker the clox came up at you lol) & 1985 GPZ1000RX ( big engine with spaghetti frame and wooden brakes).
Biggest grinner bike: Aprilia RS250 (wicked fun)
Bike that hurt me the most: 1999 GSXR750WX SRAD, highsided me and broke leg/ankle & ribs, low sided me and broke collar bone and wrist.
Most underated bikes ridden: Yamaha YZF600R ThunderCat & BMW R1150GS.

Favourite tracks ridden: (all in the UK),
1) Donnington GP
2) Snetterton
3) Brands Hatch

Track I’d most like to ride: Laguna Seca, the corkscrew….

Riding style: Slow, erratic and unpredictable but I love being out there……

My heroes in no particular order;
The Doctor (Vale Rossi), Nori Haga, Marco Melandri, Kevin Shwantz, “Steady” Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Randy Mamola, “Fast” Freddie Spencer, Wayne Gardner, Scott Russell, Aaron Slight, Troy Bayliss, Anthony Goberts (most naturally gifted racer IMHO I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching in the flesh), Norick Abe RIP, Chris Walker, Kenny Roberts Snr. , Jim Whitham, it goes on and on, so many………

My idea of a great trackday
Nice sunny day,
Plenty of tracktime although I like to sit a few sessions out cause I get tired,
Sticky tyres,
Good instructors,
BBQ at lunch time,
Talk some Boll#x ,
Have a tear up with a stranger out there who’s around my sort of pace.
Cheap petrol,
No falling off,
Talk somemore boll#x,
Head home via a Rib Shack.

I’m hoping when I get to the US to buy a 600 Sports bike and do a few track days around Texas.
As a stranger to your shores I have loads of questions so if you can help with any over the next few weeks I’d be mighty obliged lol

WELCOME GRINCHY

Grinchy,
We will be more than happy to introduce you to the trackday scene here in Texas as many of us here have bitten by the bug. We are lucky to have 3 trackday organizations currently providing trackdays here in Houston and the surrounding areas - LoneStar Trackdays, RideSmart and Longhorn Motorcycle School. All provide a great experience and you will meet some of the friendliest people in Texas. Each organization has its own personality and specialty and I'm sure everyone here will be happy to chime in with opinions (commence arguing amongst yourselves).....

There are several tracks in the Houston area or within a few hours drive, with more tracks coming online all the time. With the weather here in Texas it is practically a year round sport.

The CMRA (Central Motorcycle Racing Association) is the premier racing organization in Texas and some say in the country. It has produced riders like Kevin Schwantz and Ben Spies. It is easy for an experienced track rider to get licensed and begin racing if you choose to go that route - lots of fun and again friendly people. There is another sanctioned race organization (CCS) coming to the Houston area in the spring.

You'll have lots of choices when your get here - let us know when and we will be happy to hook you up. We promise not to make fun of your accent if you don't make fun of ours!

P.S. - This is Texas - we specialize in bull****!

Bryan

Be prepared to HATE riding in Houston. But be glad that you can LOVE riding in Texas. Get ready for looong rides that take you almost nowhere. But you can do them 12 months of the year. And with so many new trackday, mini, and big bike racing possibilities immediately around Houston it's easy to get your track fix on.

In no real order, Check out Texas Mini GP and CMRA for racing; Lone Star Track Days, RideSmart, and Longhorn Motorcycle School for trackdays; Two Wheeled Texans for Texas and suurounding area touring (most "Euro" group, IMO), Texas Sport Bike Association for Sunday morning out of town blasts, and SuperbikeMoto for poseurs .

Are you joking, I love the Texas drawl, I was lucky enough to visit Houston in the summer for 3 weeks and I used to go to the Galleria and Baybrook Mall just to listen to people talk! Stalker or what !! Went to Galverston Beach one day and this girl asked me if I wanted to buy some T-shirts…… I was ready to marry her.
Oh and the lifeguard………………….. Jeez but that’s another story,
You guys live like kings !!
Your avatar (is that what they call it ??) is the nuts, that looks quick.

Shadman
Cheers for the pointers, just what the doctor ordered.
Good lean angle and a clear visor for the eyes !!! Like it… I have to wear a tinted visor because I look like a Gerbil with my helmet on !!!

Another great addition to the site.
Welcome, Grinchy.
Hope you can make it to Texas next year.
I also immigrated from S. Korea back in 1999.
Texas became my home soon after.
More than anything else, people are the best.
I met so many great people and had wonderful experiences.
I have nothing but great memories about Texas and people in Texas.

But...
You sure you wanna leave all those great tracks in UK?
I love Donnington Park and Silverstone sure looks fun.
