14yo on a CRF450 which was halarious because I couldn't even start it. I would have to get my taller heavier friend to kick start it because the only way I could get on would be to get it rolling and then hop on then to come to a stop. I would have to stand on the right peg (prefference) and hop off before I lost my balance when the bike came to a complete stop. Then 17yo I got a CRF150 much easier to ride. Now I ride a 1098. IMO it just really comes down to what age are you most confident that you can handle what you are riding.

age

I rode an enduro bike In Venezuela (off road) at age 8 but only for a day, then My friend Ariel Had a Dirt Bike we rode around the hood and the Ditches. At age 18 A buddy of mine named Johnny let me ride a Motorcross 250 dirtbike he raced, It was Cool. But I realy never hit the road Until I was 21 and I wiped a friends 600 something I dont remember before I hit a wall! (funny story) . and now I am 29 about to be 30 I purchased Shadmans(peter)
track bike and Wiped it, so i sold it. Now i have a zx6r with only 1 mile on the odometer and ready to realy begin learnning. So 16 with 600rr is a bit much in my book but be real easy on the throtle and you will be ok.

acutally under 16, a 250 is the max the law says you can ride, over 16 whatever you and your parents can afford.

+1 ,and add the lack of maturity, and it often times leads to problems.

I'd strongly advise to get a dirt bike and get on it as much as you can!

At 16, I just don't think you have the experience in traffic and on the road at all. Most accidents you hear about are guys your age on big bikes. Taking a big dose of anti-pride and downgrading to a less powerful bike may not be such a bad idea.

To your question, I used to ride on mopeds when I was a teenager but then didn't ride anything for a looong time. Finally started on a 250 last year and now ride a bigger bike but also got a little dirt bike now and love it. I wish I'd done more dirt bike riding before even starting on the 250.

I got my license when I was 23 but I didn't start really riding till I was 25, last year. I had a katana 600 but only rode it once or twice so I really started on this gixxer 600. A friend of ours daughter rides in Oklahoma, she got her license when she was 14 and got her first bike now at 15. She is very responsible, she actually surprised me. But I guess it just depends on the maturity level of the person also.

Don't forget that age doesn't always equal maturity

I still ride like a 16 year old sometimes....

Started in the 5th grade. Have no idea how old that is. First bike was a yz80 with a metal tank. No telling how many miles in the dirt I put on that sucker but I plum wore it out.

I think dirt is the best way for anybody to learn. Gives you a chance to learn to ride without cagers trying to kill ya.

started this year, just after turning 24. scared the out of me the first couple of times i got out on my 650 twin cruiser. i feel like i've pretty well figured out the cruiser, and would like to get onto a sport bike so i can get on the track and work on my cornering ability, but the super sport bikes still kinda scare me a little.

learned this weekend that i need to respect my own riding limits a little more, just glad i didn't go down.

wow.....16?

i was only 2 years older than you when i got my first bike....but i was still immature and irresponsible at 18. i hope you are a better person than i was and you stay safe. it's hard to not have a big ego and big at the age of 16 with a 600cc supersport bike.

i wrecked twice when i got my first bike......1 from not knowing how to operate the SOB.....and 2nd from showing off

good luck to you, and be safe.
