As far as people saying they ride at say 70%, answer this; does that mean you can actually ride 30% faster?

In other words, if you took that last corner at 100 mph, can you take it at 130 mph?

If so, than yes, you're riding at 70%.
If not, well, then you're just kidding yourself.

IMO, it's really difficult to "help someone improve their skills." when you're 10 seconds out of sight in front of them.

My 2 cents.
Your 70% example is exactly what Jimmy and I are talking about.

And you're right about running off and hiding not helping anyone. When we have newbs and slower people that are wanting to learn and fine tune, I slow down and run at the pace THEY say they are comfortable with, and work up from that. Doesn't do anyone any good, or prove anything to be 2 miles down the road and say you are helping them out.

And once you and they get a feel for how they are riding, when the point comes you feel like opening up for a stretch, and you tell them not to try and keep up for the next section, at that point they are pretty well aware of what both of you are capable of.

Still comes down to each rider being responsible for themselves, and the group being made up of people with like speeds.

Either that, or you run the speed limit or below as a group, and enjoy the scenery.
