+1, Best thing you can do is to use a Credit Union, best rates and they actually do those things most conducive to your improved credit history...they likely won't finance you if you can't afford it. They run things such as debt/income ratios and analyze them stringently...

Sounds like me he has a problem that can be worse than bad credit called NO credit. He needs to establish something. Usually helps for him to get a gas card, or secured credit card and get at least 6 months payment history down on SOMETHING or he will get raped on any interest rate he is capable of securing.

it's good to establish a good credit history though so that you can buy a house later in life, not too many folks can go cash in hand for one of those...

A good solid credit history takes years to establish. Its a consistent record over a length of time that show you take on a debt, make timely payments, and then pay it off. I ****ed up my credit years ago by not paying bills on time.

My parents never taught me anything about money. EVER. So when I got old enough to get a few credit cards I went crazy and couldn't afford the payments. I remember putting mc donalds on my credit card.

Ten years later my credit score is over 750 and I have no credit card debt. Not even for emergencies. If I want to buy something substantial I take out a signature loan at my credit union and have the payments taken every two weeks from my pay check. No late or missed payments ever. Been doing this for over 6 years now. BTW the rate on my signature loans is 12.9%, find a credit card that can beat that.

I used to be with a credit union about 8 years ago, but you know I have never completely thought about doing everything like that. You are a fart smeller. I may have to do that. I too have started myself off the wrong way, no credit card debt anymore, but I am in the rebuilding phase. Good idea.

My bank did one free for me over the phone and gave me a copy of the report. Only took about 10 min.
