him pulling his report to get his score, is going to lower his score........so when he goes in to buy his truck it'll be lower once they pull it.

it doesn't give your actual score though. but if he regularly pays on time, the number should be pretty high

You are entitled to one free credit report per year...tell him to go to one of the big 3 Credit reporting agencies...Equifax, Experian or TransUnion

i don't think they penalize you for checking your own report. I thought it's when you apply for credit at a bunch of different places.

Yeah you're not penalized for getting the report. But if someone run's your credit then you get what is called a "soft hit"...hard hit's are things such as missed payments...

That and soft hits within 30 days of each other are considered as one. So if you go to apply for a vehicle/house 10 times in 2 weeks, it is considered you shopping for loans and does not affect your score or credit worthiness.

Have the guy pay to use a credit monitoring service. You can pay a one time fee to see it for 30 days, or you can pay a monthly fee like me to keep getting updates. http://www.truecredit.com

Getting the report, you're right does not affect your score.

But getting a report with your score can affect your score. Also if you are going to buy a vehicle and they run your credit with TONS of different lenders within a period of a few days, they now only count that as 1 'hit'.

like i said, use truecredit, it is only like $15 to check all three credit bureaus and he doesn't have to talk to anyone. That and he can get his scores too. When you get your free reports you don't get a score, you only get a report of what is on there.

If you have good credit then the smarter way to work would be to get preapproved from a lender then go shopping for a vehicle. That way you have a budget to work with and you most likely wont get a vehicle that you really cant afford.
I hate financing at dealers, did it twice, and you play the waiting game. I go through my credit union now and have my vehicle already picked out once I get on the lot. Now my car buying process is cut down to about an hour.

Yeah but that goes w/o saying... anytime your score is ran, you will get a hit. Thing is, most hits of the softer nature are dismissed when you make on time payments or pay something off. It is the nature of the beast (to experience these hits) if you are going to be a diligent and responsible person, responsible enough to frequently check your report. You are only mildly penalized, the hit you receive from a single ran credit report is not significant enough a deterrent that it should keep you from doing it...
