Question Things to do in Alaska

I may be taking a trip to Alaska (Fairbanks area) in January - just wondering if anyone's ever been and could give me some tips on what I should check out?

Thanks

My friend went this summer... it was plenty cold enough. She went on some glacier tours and whale watching stuff.

Maybe you can get the hardcore Inuit experience in January though. Build your own igloo, do some ice fishing, eat a seal, etc.

Because when it is warm during the summer, you can hunt and fish comfortably. You can fish on you way up the river, kill about any animal you want. I can't wait to take a trip up there. Black bear, elk, trout.....

With the three hours of daylight or so??? Heli-skiing if you can stand the cold otherwise I would find someone I like and spend a lot of indoor time with them.

I only go to alaska in the summer if I can help it. I occasionally have to go up there for work.

This glacier is on the Kenia Peninsula

It's really beautiful up there in the summer! Some of the best hiking in the world. Has a little bit of everything and daylight all the time. But wouldn't go there in the winter! Dark and cold! Even the locals don't get out unless the absolutely have to.

Alaska is awesome but I have also only been in the summer months before. There is actually a lot to do since their economy relies mainly on tourism. In the winter almost all tourist stuff(including shops) will be closed though. The waterfalls won't be doing anything in the winter either. Your best bet would be to find a good restaraunt with some fresh fish and eat until you explode.

My friend said her rental car was about 1,000 for a week?!?!?! And everything you wanted to see or do is an hour or two drive away.
