Emission requirements have changed. If I'm not mistaken, sulfer levels have to be lower than what they used to be. That costs money to do. At BP there are two whole units dedicated to doing just that.

On the other hand, Diesel is the cheapest to refine out of crude because it comes off the tower at a lower temperature than gasoline. I would think that it would even itself out as far as price is concerned.

thats what chaps my hide about it all. Record profits. BUT, it all benefits the economy. Could you imagine the oil industry AND the housing market hitting lows?

They should just raise the price and keep their mouth shut and I wouldn't have any issue but lying to blame for their profit is insulting.

why? everybody does it, you see the prices of motorcycles going down? or anything (well maybe housing). the public wants some of reasoning.

fyi, there are legit reasons prices are going up, but it takes 2 long to understand.

i'm working on the largest BP plant in the country, 1 unit is down becuase they had a prob. now they were planning on a shut down soon, the unit is down, might as well do it now vs later since it was gonna be down anyways.

so did you really want to hear all that?

Motorcycles and cars are increase in price to justify for their advance design and add ons. Gas has one chemical/additive design.
Not interested of knowing what it takes to run the business. If you set a price, I buy it if it's right. If you jack it up, I will buy it if I have to. No need to explain the increases. If I don't like it or can't afford it, I find different transportation method.

don't maybe, not as elastic demand/supply as gas.

formulas don't change as much, nor do we use as much as gas.

Why bother? All I know is that the prices are going up and they are having record PROFITS. Not revenue, but PROFIT!

That tells my simple mind that the cost hasn't changed much, but the price has reached gouging levels.

I second that. I understand your point hornet, but when Profits are setting records, that means the cost of refining and delivering aren't going up at the same rate the consumer prices are going up. That means the selling price is going up much faster than the cost. If you can't understand that math you are, well stupid!! I wasn't going to say it, but what the .

This and the fact that the dollar is falling. It take $100 to buy what the rest of the world is purchasing at $80.

If we all going to bicycling then none of the petroleum company is making any money. Lost lost situation.

yea, lose lose, because if the petroleum industry wasn't doing well, neither would our economy. Unfortunately,it is all intertwined (sp?) and all dependent. Lots of checks and balances.

It still comes out better for me to drive a diesel, even at $3.25/gallon.

Car A gets 25 mpg real world situation, not "as advertised by manuf."
25mpg x 15 gallon tank = 375 miles per tank
15 gallons of 87 @ $2.79/gallon = $41.85 per tank
375 / $41.85 = ~8.96 miles per dollar

Car B (my car) gets 40 mpg (low end of what I avg... usually around 42, sometimes up to 45)
40mpg x 15 gallon tank = 600 miles per tank
15 gallons of Diesel @ $3.25/gallon = $48.75 per tank
600 / $48.75 = ~12.31 miles per dollar

I'd rather pay an extra $7 and go 37% further per tank.
