KTM 450 SX....Is it a good SM?

I just bought a clean SX450, 2005, with bad motor. Looks like with everything replaced I'll have about $2500 in it. Does anyone know how this thing compares to other SuperMotards like the CRF450? I've never ridden one, seen anything written, or even asked about it. The KTM just fell in my lap.

I heard three or four years ago that the KTM 4 strokes would not make good street bikes due to the 5th and 6th gears being weak and not designed for extended use. Is this the case on the 2005 450?

This bike does not have electric start or a lighting coil. I looked online and couldn't find anything. Do you guys know anyone making a conversion kit?

I absolutely love my KTM200EXC that I legalized last year. But it's too noisy, neighbors hate it, and cops don't really want to trust that a 200cc two stroke is actually street legal. The 450 would draw less attention I guess. Question is, would the 4 stroke have the same rip for 3/4 th gear wheelies and other hooligan stuff? I'm thinking yes, but have never ridden one.

I think I could sell the 200 for $1600 or so, so the 450 would cost about $900 more, plus a stator, plus titling. The lighting would swap off the 200 onto the 450 without much modding. So all told, I'd be maybe $1200 out of pocket to upgrade from the 200, and prolly would want to go with 17" rims and tires so maybe add $800 for a total of $2000 more than the 200.

Is the 450 good enough to justify the extra dough?

Any good links for KTM stuff, reviews, tips?

Thanks,

P

KTM makes a very nice motorcycle IMO. For more info, visit the sub forum for KTM's over at www.supermotojunkie.com

Enjoy the ride!!!!!!

good race bike, but probably not a good street bike.......

extended periods at higher rpm's tend to make singles crater
