Just saw an airbag deployed in action

I'm watching 125cc qualifying in Valencia. A rider low sided and after a second and large life-vest loooking bag inflated over his shoulders and neck.

I don't think it helped any in this crash, but still interesting to see that used for the first time in racing.

I tried to get a screenshot during the replay, but it didn't work out so well. Just looks like giant shoulder pads here.

what happens to all that when they go and get the bike back up and try to get riding again. I would bet it gets in the way.

It looks like it can be dettached. I think he was trying to pull it off when he was walking away. They cut back to the action so I don't know if it actually came off or not.

Did the commentators talk about it? It looks like it could save a broken neck...

Nope.. They never broadcast the commentators during 125 and 250 qp. Heck, they didn't even broadcast them until the last 10 minutes of MotoGP QP.

It's an interesting system. I'm not sure what triggers the deployment. It was a soft lowside and he slid at least 50 - 60 feet on the asphalt before it deployed.

I don't know either, but maybe it's one of those shock sensors like the helmets have...

Ok.. just saw a video about it on motogp.com. It was hard to understand the Dainese rep's thick Italian accent, but he said there is some hardware inside the hump and monitors the body position and dynamics of the rider and will inflate the system if it detects a crash. He didn't say how exactly how it detects the crash.

Body position and dynamics? So if you lay down in the pit garage, POOF?! Pillow of nappy time.

I'm sure it's much smarter than that though.

What if it went off during a race? Looks like it could cause a crash...

I doubt it would cause a crash, but it will definitely slow the rider down.

Neat. Hmm, I though a proximity sensor would be the way to go so that when the rider comes off the bike the airbag would activate.
