Settle a bet for me ...

Are all Law Enforcement Officers allowed to use the HOV lane (solo) regardless of what vehicle that they're in?

Or, do they have to be in a marked cruiser?

Thanks!

'Allowed' as in legally or just not cited by other LEO's?

LEGALLY they are not supposed to be using the HOV lane when driving solo.

There was a crackdown on this several years ago... prolly getting to be time again for it.

http://www.ridemetro.org/Transportat...HOV_system.asp

Laws of the Lanes

Any vehicle meeting occupancy and weight restrictions may use the HOV, with the following exceptions:
No single occupancy vehicles.
No vehicles towing trailers of any sort.
No trucks with more than two axles or a gross weight capacity of one ton or greater.
No bicycles (motorcycles are allowed).
No pedestrians.

(The exception to single occupants includes on-duty law enforcement vehicles; METRO/TxDOT operational or maintenance vehicles; and motorcycles. ( Found on a dif site).

When not on duty or in an official vehicle, they are bound by the same laws as the rest of us...

I see alot of people on my way home (in-bound 290) riding solo and they are not cops.

I don't think it matters. If you are a police officer and driving solo on HOV and got pulled over by another cop, show your badge and you're on your way. Technically, it's wrong but being a police officer does have it's benefits.

....have some FUN with this one then...

"Drivers who notice violators can call the HERO hotline at 713/921.HERO (921.4376) to report the cheaters. "

Report those solo guys & the stupid riders that are passing folx in the HOV.

p.s. From the artcile I was reading, most the HOV enforcement comes from motorcycle cops. :-)

I didn't think that it was legal. Not that I care enough to report anyone, but I'll win the bet.
