Well... I didn't really see anything in the bible about molesting children or sodomy, so I am going to have to say:
THE ACT OF AN INDIVIDUAL AND NOT THE CHURCH!!
That is unless you have a seen a piece of doctrine somewhere that the rest of us have not.

Since we are on the trivia subject, I have one for you...
In the good book, according to , what is man's biggest sin? The original sin?
I will give you hint... it ended the Garden of Eden.

My take (Mala=southern baptist preacher's daughter ) is this: churches--and let's clarify "church" further by referring to it as a group of people since the building and grounds are inconsequential--are curious entities with unique personalities. It takes a lot of time to find one with fit for each person. A church is really nothing more than a group of people coming together to support/encourage one another in their efforts at attaining a certain lifestyle, one that follows the principles set out in the bible. They can seem "fake" because no matter where you go: a Mensa meeting, a Mason meeting --for Arturo --, a social club, a Little League team, etc., people are there for different reasons, and they all step thru the door with a set of standards they believe need to be followed. One example: People can seem fake if they curse a blue streak Monday thru Saturday but put it on hold each Sunday. It's no different that the person who curses a blue streak Sunday thru Monday but puts it on hold the minute his grandmother is in the room. We move in and out of culture at a whim, changing our speech, clothing, and habits to match the expectations of place. People in churches can also seem fake when, in fact, they're just a bit flakey. I think churchfolk can seem fake when they don't fundamentally understand why they shouldn't engage certain behaviors--or should--and simply try to mimic others with no real understanding. The world outside church doors sets a norm and most believe that shifts--as though magically--once they step into a temple/church and so they are stripped out of their comfort zone and can seem stilted. Just some of my observations.

As far as modern churches are concerned, I believe they ought to have inc. behind their names. Many are consumed with growing, growing, growing. Building new structures, raising this and that, funding for far flung mission efforts, etc. They outstrip their resources and exhaust the members and the attention to one another and is sidetracked. No church should ever go into debt to grow. Leaders who do it are suspicious at best.

As far as understanding the bible, it's tough. Tough in the same way that reading the Epic of Gilgamesh, Sumerian texts, and other amcient accounts are difficult. Without a healthy bit of historical context (who were those people? What were their habits? Customs? Beliefs? etc.) there's a tremendous amount of meaning lost. The King James version is a decent translation, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to read for modern folk. The words are in English, but then so are Shakespearian plays; look at many folks have trouble relating to them. The transliterations have almost completely lost the connotations that exist in Hebrew. . .heck, the KJV has only a scant grip on them to begin with.

I have little problem reconciling the miserable leadership of modern churches with Christianity because I saw my father the minister in the pulpit, and I lived with my dad the human. Looking to find in a church or thru human leadership is dangerous. To steal a Buddhist caution (I think it's Buddhist...perhaps someone can help ) "Don't mistake the reflection of the moon for the moon." Don't get me wrong, churches serve a purpose, but that purpose has been subverted by greed and misguided ideas about growth and popularity. Same thing was a problem way back in da olden days; though it does seem exacerbated by modern population and media.

Well, anyway. There are my two cents. Of perhaps four. Mostly just random responses to various posts.

it was not a trivia question. there is no right or wrong anwer. it was meant to evoke an opinion.

FWIW, that's a lot of INDIVIDUALS GIVING THE CHURCH A BAD NAME

I saw a t-shirt that summed this up for us outsiders looking in. It's a bit crude, but here goes.

Christianity: The belief that some cosmic Jewish Zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree. Makes perfect sense.

It's all in the language used I guess.

Without stepping too far into the tricky of this situation, let me offer another take on this Nikki. It's OK to be comfortable with allowing folks to express the fact that they don't believe. In as sense, it's their -given right, yes? He gave us the choice to believe or not and the free will to voice those beliefs.
