I have been to a few and you would feel better in the black and white. You will be surrounded by dress blues, which look black, and red. There will also be Navy officers (you know the story) in attendance and they will be all white. If you choose the all black, they may lose you in the corner......The one on the right will blend beautifully with everyone there.

You should find out the location and the agenda and go from there. Usually, though, it's a dinner and speeches, sometimes dancing afterwards. A cocktail dress (which is usually fitted, knee length, and classicly designed) with pumps is sufficient. It's too late in the Season to wear sandals to an event, however peep-toe is nice if you've had a pedi. Don't wear platforms or wedges as they are not as dressy. Depending on your body type, wear a dress that accentuates you- If RED looks good on you, I say go for RED!

Hope I helped... I am a girly girl and love dressing up all the time!
Okay, my post refers to the dressy-dress . If it is close to Christmas (in my experience) it is usually the more elegant gala but I agree that you should find out the protocol from your "date". Believe me, they want you to look wonderful too!!!

Thanks everyone for all the advice and help. Ktesippe, thank you so much for your advice especially...I didn't want to stand out nor did I want to get lost in the corner as you put it. Also, from what my date has told me, this is formal attire (the dressy-dress ball) the Marine Corp. Birthday Ball (if that helps clarify a bit). I did a google search as Ulric suggested for past and the pictures that I found most of the women were very elegantly dressed with the full to the ground dresses. So I guess I'm set now...well except for finding the perfect heels to go with the dress haha

Depends on what uniform he is wearing. My old battle axe (the wife) always wore red when I was in my Dress blues, really pops with the bloodstripe and the red pipping

Whichever one you go with, it is now a requirement that you post up modeling pics so we can validate your choice!

You did ask,.......

he had mentioned red, but I can't carry red off with my skin tone and colour hair.
