Motorcyclist killed in wreck mourned

By Hunter Sauls
The Facts

Published October 30, 2007

LAKE JACKSON — Friends and family of Christopher Lewis, 33, of West Columbia remember him as a father, coach and man of character.

Lewis was thrown from his motorcycle and killed early Sunday on Highway 332, Lake Jackson Police Sgt. Mike Bailey said.

He was riding to the home of his best friend, Greg Lewis, when Timothy Lee, 22, of Clute turned his 1998 Toyota Camry in front of Lewis, Bailey said. Lee was turning onto Magnolia Street, crossing the westbound lane of the highway, he said.

Lake Jackson police are investigating the accident and have not issued any citations, Bailey said.

Lewis suffered a head injury, even though he was wearing a helmet, Bailey said. Emergency medical technicians worked to treat him at the scene as they waited for a helicopter to rush him to the hospital. Lewis died before the helicopter arrived, Bailey said.

“He was a of a guy,” said Robert Bacon, a friend of Lewis’ and fellow member of the Nu Breed Rydaz motorcycle club. “His kids meant the world to him. He touched so many people because of his character. Everyone respected and loved him.”

Lewis had two sons, Michael and Cameron, and was an avid outdoorsman and athlete. He also was an experienced motorcyclist, capable of performing stunts, Bacon said.

His death serves as a brutal reminder to members of the Nu Breed Rydaz that riding a motorcycle requires extra attentiveness regardless of a rider’s skill level, Bacon said.

“It’s like I explained to the guys at the meeting we had last night,” Bacon said. “We as motorcycle riders have to look out for the other drivers because they aren’t looking for us. It’s frustrating to think about what could have happened. It’s not going to bring him back.”

A memorial service for Lewis will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Columbia United Methodist Church.

An account to benefit his sons has been opened at Compass Bank in Lake Jackson by the Nu Breed Rydaz club.
