Exclamation HOW TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER? HELP!!!!

Hey guys im currently a criminal justice major at sam houston and im in my second year.....i decided that i want to go ahead and become a police officer so i have a steady job in the field im goin to school for. My question is, what is the best way to become an officer? (Academy, Department Academy, College Classes etc) What are certain requirements that are needed? (College Hours, Age, Education, Past criminal record/misdeamoners etc). How long does it take to become one and do you get paid while in training/academy? Any Department Hiring?
Please help guys im really interested in this and know there are some officers on this site, thanks!!!!

If you are in your second year then I would finish up the degree and then start looking at depts to apply to. Check out the websites of the big four. Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin. They're all pretty much competing for the same group of people. Make sure you meet the basic requirements first, especially on the criminal history, credit check, and driving history. Drug use is a big one too.

What Andre said... get the degree and then join the force as an officer. I have friends that are cops and they quit school and wish they hadn't before joining the force.

yep. most go back after they get on the dept. Its hard going to school and working full time in law enforcement.

Get the undergrad now and if your dept offers tuition reimbursement, let them pay for grad school.

Get the undergrad now in a DIFFERENT course of study. Then go to an academy, guys who get P.O. license from college miss out on a lot. then, when you're tired of being broke/crapped on/wake up/ you can rely on your degree to triple your cop salary. I suggest marketing.
ask me how I know. go ahead, ask.

im workin at cvs right now makin 7.50/hr, im takin 18 hrs of school and im just thinkin of joinin the sheriffs dept next year, which will be a hella lot better then where im at now...but ill be 21 in sept. but a friend who is a deputy sheriff said that they will accept me at the academy in august

I know there is an academy on spencer hwy in pasadena. thats where 90% of pearlands force comes from. and pearland cops get paid pretty decent compared to other pigs. (no offence with the oinker comment, but i have been harrassed way too much by alot of the pearland cops and to me all cops are pigs/ mo fo's/scum of the earth/and whatever else you can think of until proven otherwise. meaning when they pull me over and treat me like a human being then i will do the same back. basically what you give is what you will get from me.)

makin 7.50 at cvs compared to cop money (call it at least 45 a year) may seem like a big jump, and at first it is. but it ain't. I'll pay you 12 an hour to be a parts guy at our office, and when you graduate college you can earn decent money. folding money.
the most bigoted, untrustworthy, uneducated, waterheads I have ever met were other cops. not all of course, but easily the majority. and once you get in, you're stuck unless you have an education or someone who can give you a job to get you out. unless you want to do security or loss prevention, which turns out no better. It's one of those jobs that no one thinks they can do anything else if they leave and often they are right. think ahead, good luck.
