thoughts on selling candy at work?

So my office just hired 4 kids that know nothing about piping, drafting, anything, on part-time to 'learn the industry'. I think they may have had one CAD class. But they are still in H.S. My boss didnt want to hire them but someone 'higher up' has a friend that is with some organization that helps these gets get a head start. We have them scanning documents for electronic filing (nothing close to what they were hired for). Whatever, good for them they are getting 'experience'.

But one of them has been going around selling candy from a wal-mart plastic bag. (store bought, reese's 2-packs, snickers, sour candy, etc) for $1. I don't think that should be allowed. Supposedly its for a fund-raiser for their organization...but none of the others are selling it...and its not in any special box or package like they usually are. Its just regular store shelve packaging...

what do you guys think? am I being an a-hole?

i see that as nothing more than a vending machine... but if he is doing it while being paid by the company then the company should have a problem with it. they aren't paying him just to do that, he is wasting the companies money by not doing what he was paid to do while he is selling the candy. also, could be harassing employees if he continues to walk around asking... it disturbs ohters trying to work

have you bought any candy? if someone would walk in here and offer me an almond joy for $1 i would take it right now. If he's on the clock, his employment should be reconsidered. . .

I NEVER buy ANYTHING from anyone at work....you buy from one, you buy from all. Forget that...I got friends and family that I'll buy from. And FWIW- they give us free soda's, bottled water, and candy at my workplace.

You could really be an a$$ when you report him to HR for running his candy business at your workplace using your company's resources. HR usually files this under Ethics and that kid shouldn't be around much longer.

well my boss works 2 doors down from me and SHE asks him too along with just about everyone else in my department...

what if it really was a low-budget, high-profit fundraiser? I would feel pretty then!!!

he shouldnt be doing that from an HR perspective, but honestly who cares? You get to buy candy if you want. It's not hurting you, why about it?

Nowadays, kids selling candies don't have special wrapping. Those wrapping for a big big events where they have to contact the manufacturer to have them printed on the wrappings and that cost money.
There are kids that involved in some kind of groups or clubs that they are trying to find funds. That is why only one is selling it instead of the others.

If it is a fundraiser, ask him where the 'flyer' or 'email' or website is at promoting the "fundraiser".
