Impact Jacket

Coincidentally, while I am sitting here crying at work, my co-worker PMs me this:

Air Bag-Like Jacket Saves Motorcyclist's Life

Here are the jackets: http://www.impactjackets.com/

Thanks for the link Patricia.

I think $500.00 is cheap compared with Hospital care costs. Even with Medical Insurance you pay more than that for co-payments and deductibles.

I'm going to check out that jacket ASAP.

Watch the "for sale" section, maybe I'll put for sale all my jackets.

I met a guy in June who had an air-bag type jacket. Somewhere around here I think I started a thread.

The technology has been out awhile. There are actually quite a few manufacturers. One of the biggest is hit-air. (www.hit-air.com/english/main.html) I suspect the web site of the company in the news story is down because it can't handle the traffic.

There are a few drawbacks to all the ones I've found:
  1. Theyíre only textile so far. So they provide impact protection but not the best abrasion protection.
  2. No one seems to manufacture any pants that will zip up to them, so youíd have to buy some and get them altered.
  3. They work best if you fly off the bike and are airborne long enough for it to inflate. The CO2 is not as fast as an airbag so you need a little "hang time" (like one second or less). Not all collisions would give you sufficient hang time. Iím not sure what would happen if you low sided and were sliding. Of course thatís not an impact but would it actually inflate with your body weight on it?

Hit-Air is working on version that you could wear over your leathers. Back in August they promised to send me one for a review and testing. If they do then I'll post up here to get questions from everyone. I told them I'd record videos and post them on YouTube.

The site works for me but some pages do come up slow.

Here is an excerpt:

Quote:
In the event of an accident when the rider is ejected off of the bike the landyard will separate from the bike activating the CO2 cartridge to instantly inflate the jacket in approximately a half second. The jacket provides extra protection when ejected from the bike to the most vulnerable parts of the body. The jacket enhances protection to the front chest area, side ribs areas, the back area giving support to the neck and spine areas.

All of the jackets are reusable, after inflation however all jackets need to be inspected by an authorized dealer for damage before reuse.

There are at least two others that I came across while researching it back in June. I found them via Googling "Airbag Jacket". One of the companies are in Europe and another one is here. I did not find Impact Jacket at the time.

At the time, I liked the Hit-Air the best because they had good neck protection, use CE armor, and they've been around since about 2,000.

I might have links to the other sites on my computer at home.

Interesting concept; a friend mentioned this to me a while back and sounded pretty impressed. He researched more and ended up dropping it, I guess for the reason of price. Though correct on the medical and burial bill, its hard to pass up good, proven leathers when looking at a textile.

I love the idea, but wanna see a jacket with the foam from Judge Dred....
I'll be onboard for that one, until I accidently trip it....

I contacted hit-air today. They said they are 3 weeks away from having the version that is made to supplement your leathers. At that time he said he'd still send me a unit to evaluate.

This supplementary unit is only supposed to be about $200. If it pans out and I get an eval unit, I'll post the info up.

There's also the possibility that they may be at the upcoming motorcycle show. He said they're trying to finalize the shows right now.

yes I saw that and you should see what my kevlar looked like after lowsiding into a gravel trap at ~100mph in a WERA race in leeds, Al.

Kevlar is a whole lot strong then 1000 D nylon.

Looks like it could be a good jacket. I think the leather one would be the one I would buy.
