TSU--- Priscilla Slade Trial

I get home and turn on the news and BREAKING NEWS!!! Its a mis-freakin-trial! She spends a load of school money on her house and the jurors say that there was not enough evidence presented to make a decision and the judge calls a mistrial. How the could they not make a decision? A lady spends someone elses money on herself.====That is bad. WTF?!!

http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5209481.html
Quote:
A judge has declared a mistrial in the criminal financial mismanagement trial of former TSU leader Priscilla Slade, after jurors said they were hopelessly deadlocked.

The six-woman, six-man jury said today they could not reach an agreement on the charge that accuses the former leader of Texas Southern University of spending more than $500,000 of school money on personal expenses.

"We have agonized over this," the jury said in a lengthy note to State District Judge Brock Thomas. "However, we cannot arrive at a unanimous verdict without doing violence to our consciences. To continue deliberating would be of no benefit.''

Earlier today, they told Thomas they were deadlocked 6 to 6. Seven said they were "adamently opposed to changing their vote.''

On Wednesday, they said they were deadlocked 8 to 4 and on Thursday 7 to 5. Notes they sent to the judge did not indicate which way the jury was leaning.

Slade's attorney has said the purchases, such as furniture, landscaping and a bar tab, were necessary and legitimate in her role to improve the image of the historically black university.

She was charged with misapplication of fiduciary property of more than $200,000.

So now its more taxpayer money down the drain and of course, more media coverage. It doesnt make sense to me. The story after the Priscilla Slade trial, there is a guy who illegally towed peoples cars and he gets sentenced to 18 years in jail.

Wrecker driver headed to prison for illegal tows

04:06 PM CDT on Friday, October 12, 2007

KHOU.com staff report

A wrecker driver is headed to prison for a crime committed in June.

Prosecutors say Michael Raitano and his son illegally towed some 52 cars from a bank parking lot on St. Patrick’s Day.

After the vehicles were towed, officials say, the pair posted towing signs.

Friday a jury convicted Raitano and sentenced him to 18 years in prison.
How do you find a guy guilty for that and not find a lady guilty for spending school money?

With all the school money, she had enough to hire a good lawyer.

How about, who the **** cares. She just happened to almost get caught on what we can all assume that all those men/women are doing.

You can't tell me that in every firm, people do not write off a little extra money on an expense, or when you do your taxes.

A firm is any corporation. For example, Enron is a firm.

When she began working for TSU, she was living in Stafford. Her house may not have been presentable for her to bring "investors", "clients", etc. and so she moved. She had to be more presentable. So that is what she did. She may have gone a little overboard with the spending, such as the landscaping and furniture but unlike others who do this, she happened to get caught.

for grins, I'd like to know what the jury of her peers consisted of.
6 men, 6 wimminz, what color?
sad but true fact is that in this day and age, the last question will make all the difference in a missappropriations trial unless the culprit was white, then it would be death row time.

hah...well here goes the "bOOlshyt suggestion of the day" ...you were on to something for a sec, just a lil shortsighted...

Obviously color plays a role in many cases...sad but true...all races/colors are victims of discrimination (particularly in the legal system)- it is all a matter of to what degree and under what circumstance

This case was bull though, she should have experienced some legal reprimand....it is understood that this practice (Ceo's and other entities within financial and other related institutions skimming off the top for personal leisures) is commonplace, but she was caught and deserved to suffer the consequences of her actions

I don't know what happened in the trial, but it seems like she could have defended herself by pointing a finger at the person(s) who let her have the money.
This could have muddied the water about whether or not she knew that it wasn't ok. In other words she could have said she thought it was ok since the expeditures were approved by someone.

Or not...
