Cost of owning a bike

Okay, a lot of folks on here often talk about how broke they are because of buying stuff for their bike all the time and starters talk about cheapest financing and insurance but I wonder if they consider the 'other' costs that go beyond just purchasing the initial bike. When I started, I had the romantic notion that I'd actually save money by owning a bike, simply by commuting a lot and saving gas by not driving my gashog truck. Well, was I wrong!

So, to face hardcore reality, how much does it cost you be the proud owner of a bike or bikes? How much do you spend on financing, insurance, maintenance, upgrades, mods, gear, tires, trackdays, medical, etc. Feel free to list per week/month/year. How much richer could you be?

For me so far, rough estimates, and I just started spring 2006 and may not even be that into it yet, in Dollars :

I am not listing how much I actually paid for my bikes, but feel free.

700 full coverage insurance/year
200 on maintenance/year
500 on upgrades and mods/year
1500 on gear/year
500 on tires/year
200 on trackday/year (cornerworked for the other)
Due to a crash, about 1400 on medical so far

Not to count all the money I spent on burgers at bike night, gas when doing rides on the weekend and also having lunch then, etc.

I just thought it is a good reality check.

I had a co-worker the other day mention how much he may save getting a bike and how to justify this investment to his wife. :/:

True!

misc stuff.. ugh.

I got two motorcycle calendars hanging next to a horse calendar here in the office, T-Shirts, this and that. Besides spending gas going to watch trackdays and races and whatnot.

Never thought it would turn into such an addiction ...

but let's just say, I have a lot in my overseas accounts

850 full coverage insurance
500 on maintenance
2500 on upgrades and mods (includes the shop in garage and trailer)
1300 on gear (three people)
0.00 on tires/year
0.00 on trackday/year

This is far since I purchased the bike in July. Haven't purchased tires and haven't done the track day thing yet. Plan on starting next year in March. Might buy a different bike first. Just haven't decided but dont want to mess up new gixxer...

Not including the bike. so ya it is a expensive hobby, Just imagine if you speed racer on the streets and have tickets on top of all that. Just depeneds on what you use your bike for. I am a advocate of people to do track days at least one. Everyone ought to do one, might slow them down on the street and see that you can push it on the track in a safe enviorment.

J
And what made you faster? the $1500 in upgrades?

or the $800 in trackdays?
