Teens Caught On Tape Tossing Debris From Bridge

http://www.kcci.com/news/14309351/detail.html

Two Teens Charged

POSTED: 10:21 am CDT October 10, 2007
UPDATED: 10:44 am CDT October 10, 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A group of teenagers were caught on tape Tuesday night throwing concrete and steel rods from the Ninth Street Bridge on to Interstate 235.

NewsChannel 8 saw a child throw a log into on coming traffic and called 911.

"It could have been deadly. Somebody could have died," said Sgt. Vince Valdez of the Des Moines Police Department.

The camera captured bricks and a log being tossed from the bridge during Tuesday's rush-hour commute.

"As the officer arrived at the East Ninth Street Bridge, he observed a juvenile throw what looked like a log over the railing onto the freeway," Valdez said.

Police arrested two juveniles and charged them with criminal mischief. They said no one was hurt, but two cars were damaged.

"I was dared to by a whole bunch of kids I was hanging out with," said 13-year-old Jonathan Butts, who is accused of tossing a log onto the freeway. "I was walking up here with a couple of my friends. They decided to throw a couple bricks off first, and they dared me to throw a tree stump off, so I did in the grass."

Butts said it wasn't worth it. Police said he is lucky no one was killed.

"There have been some cases around the country where people have been killed in this similar circumstance," Valdez said.

"I'm sorry for throwing stuff at them," Butts said.

Four teenagers suspected of throwing cement off the same bridge last week have yet to be caught.

i know if i had a child, they would be hoping the cops would keep them. maybe its a good thing i don't have kids.

on a lighter note, I only did bouncy and ketchup and mustard. bouncy are bad , when they hit a windsheild they go for a long long ways. and keep going and going and going. its kinda cool actually.

When I lived out in Cali a guy had JUST bought a new Corvette and was driving home from the dealer when he was killed by some moron who threw a piece of cement off an overpass.

This happened to friends of mine on 59 North, under the old Mandell St. bridge. The brick hit dead-on center of the sunroof, but it was a good thing they had the inner slide closed, which almost broke completely off and hit the top of the head of the driver. He almost lost control, but quickly pulled to the side. The glass was everywhere, and they had their baby boy in the back. Luckily, no cuts or glass in the eyes.

...now I'll confess, I always thought it'd be amusing to drop some of those really small 'super bounce' ... but then I never carried through with it either.
