camera heads? D40

so my wife wants a nice camera. i was thinking the basic D40 body w/ the bad 18-200 AF-S VR lens?

this is her first serious camera, and the 18-200 covers a wide spectrum w/o having too many lense. the lens is 50% more then the body will be, but if she wants a better body in future the lens is still more then adaquete.

I have the D50 and it is a great camera. Wish I had the lense you are looking at.

Can't go wrong with Nikon. I don't know too much about the D40, but when I bought my D70s early last year, it was a less expensive alternative to the D100 Pro camera, and it turns out, the D70s was so much better in features and performance for an amatuer photographer. I've been into photography since HS. If the D40 was intended for the recreational photographer, then I'm sure it would fit the bill for your wife. A client I built a house for last year, owns the D40, and she loves it. I could tell it was much simpler than the D70s, but the pictures she showed me were very good pics from a lady who didn't know too much about photography.

All Nikon lenses are interchangeable, so in the future she can upgrade the body, and still make use of the excellent Nikkor lenses, which IMHO are the best in the SLR sector. I still us my old manual Nikon Nikkor lenses from my Nikon FE, on my D70 with great results.

BTW, the only thing that concerned me with the D40 was that it seemed very, very lightweight. So I'm not too sure of the durability, but if you take good care of it, then it shouldn't be a problem in that regard.

Rob is right. You can't go wrong with Nikon. I'm a Canon snob myself, but Nikon has some great stuff as well.

I have always had good luck with the 18-135 and a 12-24 lens. These two together have covered everything that I have wanted to shoot.

I especially love the quality of the 12-24 ED lens on close ups and panarama views. Teamed up with pizel size on the D70, you can print posters for your office and daughters bedroom and playroom.

One other point that I just thought about, the DX is different from regular SLR lenes. They have a longer focal length by design. That is why I use the 135mm length instead of the 200mm.

Just FYI...

d40 specific lens will not work with the others, well the AF will not work.

My d40 (6 megapixels)is fantastic. It actually takes clearer pictures than the 10 megapixels.

Easy to use. Very stirdy. Gorgeous pictures. It is impossible to screw up photos with this camera. Every photo I take comes out perfect.
