Close Call this morning on I-10

Riding to work this morning on I-10W right after the 45N exit. An 18-wheeler wheel (no tire, just the hub) comes out of nowhere. It was bouncing off the cars like a pinball. I hit the brakes pretty hard and it passed right in front of the bike. I immediately got on the gas in case it decided to come back at me. It all happened in less than a few seconds.

It didn't phase me at the time, but honestly by the time I got to work I was a little rattled.

Keep an eye out for road debris!!

...!!! That's crazy ....!!! I see all kind of debris in the freeway but an 18-wheeler hub is just surreal...!! Glad you react fast...!!!! nothing like an adrenalin shot to start your work day.

Had something like that happen to me 2 times, 1st time was a trailer wheel and tire came off of a trailer a couple cars ahead and to the left of me it came at me like a bullet and bounced off a couple cars and the wall to mi right and came back across and hit 2 more cars, I was on the bike, had to brake hard and dive left and missed me by 2 feet maybe? the 2nd time We were in the van drivin down I 10 from our ranch in the hill country and a tire came off of something going the other way on the freeway crossed and was headed straight for my windshield and I was pulling a trailer I slammed the brakes and changed lanes hard and flew past me bouncing it was bouncing high like 29 feet in the air and was coming down just about even with the windshield when it passed prolly wouldnt have touched the grill or hood but come in the windshield perfectly I was doing 70 and the other truck it came off of was prolly doing at least the same, allways gotta be on ur toes, I had a very close family friend lost almost the whole family because the same thing on I 10 between san antonio and Houston, it hit the 4 runner and killed him his wife and the 2 older children the only survivor was a 2 year old boy, sooo sad, he is now 4 years old

Glad you cleared that obstacle! 18 wheelers scare me. I always stay back for a while before I pass them, then if possible, pass 2 lanes over. You never know what's in front of them if you're too close behind, and those gators can split you in half if they delam just as you pass. Stay away from them... trailers too!

wow. GREAT job SCANNING ahead. SCAN... SCAN... SCAN. i can't say that enough of how important that is for all people to do when on two or in a cage. 18 wheelers don't scare me much i help them switch lanes and they wave at me but what really scares me were the ones with HUGE 4x4x5's sticking out under the center of what they are pulling.

Yesterday while sitting in rush hour traffic on 59 (just moments before I began my daily filtering) I picked up a 5 foot piece of HARDCORE chain off of the freeway and wore it around my neck until I got to a place where I could throw it onto the shoulder.

Couldn't tell at the time because of my gloves, but the fokker was greasy as and it fu cked my jacket right proper. Oh well, guess it adds character.
