I am guilty of riding like a squid sometimes I like to wheelie, even if they are power whoolies.....I ride with at minimum jeans, boots, gloves, jacket and helmet 99.9% of the time. Call me a squid, I could careless....but I do likes to whoolie and I hear the same of others.....

lack of gear=squid
high freeway speed weaving in and out of traffic=squid

riding fast on the backroads with an occasional wheelie...perfectly fine(as long as you got the gear)

imo depends on how/where you ride + experiance.

i believe in helmet all the time. i dont see a need to strap on my SMX plus A-stars just to ride to work...

I feel that a squid is someone who has little to no experience on bikes and tries to ride like there a pro. Also someone who endangers others by there actions would be squdish. I don't think that gear has anything to do with it. It is smart to wear gear, but if you don't your not a squid to me. That is peoples choice and does not effect other people in a wreck. To me it's like telling someone that is wearing shorts in December that they are a squid for not wearing pants. I think folks should just worry about themselves, there bikes and there gear.

I agree with both of you guys. I never use the word but I hear it online all the time. I fosho had my moments of everything

If the word has multiple meanings then its versatile like the work "fk". We should come up for a word for idiots that ride w/o gear and a word for people that right like idiots. I always thought poser was the word for people that just can't ride

When I asked Guitar Man this question - LAST YEAR - He said a squid is someone who doesn't wear gear because if they hit the road they are FRIED CALAMARI. I guess it stuck. So I think Flip Flops, shorts, t-shirts. If you wear this on the highway in Houston, no matter how safe you drive, you are asking for road rash as the best of your problems.

Today - 60+ mph, 336 behind the 105, guy in swim trunks, sandals and a helment. Squid...

crazy, lane-splitting riding above 100 on traffic. No gear whatsoever. The first 4 options make no sense. Riding with gear does not constitute what it means to be a squid. I would have to pick wearing shorts w/ flip flops, and riding over 100 in traffic.

I would mostly have to agree with riding like a jacka$$ making you a squid. I know too many harley people that never even use helmets. It Doesnt bother me any. I strap mine on and do my thing. Sure I would feel bad if they wrecked.. but who am I to preach?

WHEN I FIRST THE TERM SQUID AS RELATED TO MOTORCYCLES, I ASSUMED FROM LOGIC THAT IT REFERED TO SOMEONE WHO'S GOT NO BODY GEAR AND HAS ALL OF HIS PRIMARY BODY'S PART COMPLETELY EXPOSED TO NATURE-- LIKE A SQUID... NO FUR, NO EXTRA LAYER OF SKIN OR FAT TO PROTECT HIM FROM THE ENVIRONMENT'S INCLEMENCIES. LOL
AND THAT'S HOW I'VE DEFINED EVER SINCE. SOMEONE WHO RIDES RECKLESSLY AND HAS COMPLETETE DISREGARD FOR HIS AND OTHER'S SAFETY AND LIVES, I JUST CALL HIM A MINDLESS SUICIDAL MONKEY.

Riding like an idiot is the right answer for me (age 35).

Lack of gear can be attributed to budgett, although not very smart. Everyone can afford jeans and even a denim jacket.
No helmet is just plain idiotic. If you can pay for the bike, get a helmet (even if only a $100 one, better than nothing).

That's exactly the way I see it, as well. I found it interesting how the "definition" seems to have transformed from one gen to the next. I just wish there wasn't such a nit-picking attitude I now see, all to often. I remember being advised, as well as advising others to "At least get a helmet if that's all you can afford. If you can... wear a leather jacket (any leather jacket), or at least a demin jacket. Broken bones and road rash is one thing, but your melon is your melon".

I voted #8, but I think SQUID is a relative term based on the person dishing it out. In some circles, I'm a squid because I hang out on MotoHouston.

Just buy the best protective gear you can afford, wear it, and don't ride like a fool and you're good in my book.
