New Effort to Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, November 2, 2007

U.S. Transportation Secretary Peters Announces Broad New Effort to Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities – Releases a Public Service Announcement on Her Personal Crash Survival

WASHINGTON, D.C. – To combat the alarming trend of rising motorcycle injuries and fatalities, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters today announced a comprehensive new federal initiative to improve motorcycle safety with more rider education and training, tougher standards for helmet certification labeling, law enforcement training, and road designs that consider motorcycle dynamics.
Secretary Peters – an avid motorcyclist – also released a television public service announcement where she credits her riding gear for saving her life during a 2005 motorcycle crash.

“Take it from a motorcycle enthusiast who also happens to be the U.S. Secretary of Transportation,” Secretary Peters says in the PSA. “Check your bike before each ride, wear all your safety equipment and ride with others so you’re more visible. If I hadn’t taken those safety precautions, I wouldn’t be standing here today.”

Peters said the motorcycle safety initiative will create new national safety and training standards for novice riders, curb counterfeit helmet labeling so that consumers can be certain they are buying DOT-certified helmets, place new focus on motorcycle-specific road improvements, and provide training to law enforcement officers on how to spot unsafe motorcyclists. In addition, Peters said, the plan includes a broad public awareness campaign – including the PSA - on safe riding techniques.

Secretary Peters said she is one of the many “baby-boomers” who have recently returned to riding after years of shelving their bikes in lieu of family and careers. In August 2005, she suffered a broken collar bone after a crash on a two-lane highway just north of Tucson, Arizona.

For more information on DOT’s new motorcycle safety initiative, to watch Secretary Peters’ PSA, or for the report on the new motorcycle fatality statistics, please visit www.NHTSA.dot.gov.

Well Lane sharing creates a Lane for Motorcycles Hmmm wonder how this will play out

air cooled bike, you know im gonna be putting down the shoulder and not just sitting there. law or no law! its not worth having my engine destroyed.

i have heard too many stories about people opening their door to hit a biker, etc. so i always go to the far right and ride the shoulder. (so to be on the opposite side of driver) and also i keep a "open doors width" away from the passenger side doors as well.

im also not gonna haul bauls either, i go like 5-10 mph. if the shoulder is smooth and there is lotsa room, maybe 15mph.

the only problem i see if there is a law passed to make what i describe as legal, all the idiots will think that means its ok to do 150mph between cars anytime of day regardless of how heavy traffic is etc...

then again, let em. we need to thin the gene pool anyways. and if he gets a ticket instead of dying, well that one leo closer to his quota that might not have to write me a ticket for something dumb cause he is worried about his job.

I didn't say it was legal. I explained this in my previous post.

In post #97 I wrote:
"If it's not legal (lane splitting) and I am close to my exit, then I might ride the shoulder. Less likely to get into an accident that way and it's safer than sitting in traffic."

We're talking about stop and go traffic here, not 80mph.

dude my bike has the poorest designed cooling system in the planet. 2 small rad. mounted on the side, and it;s never overheated. the only time it shut of was back in the day and we were cruising richmond. so the air cooled argument is a crock.

if your gonna get a reward of saved time, you should have some risk. if you ride the shoulder why can;t i in my car or 18 wheeler, they're air cooled as much as bikes are.

why do bikers feel entitled ? i have no prob. using a bikes size to it;s advantage. riding down the emerg. lane isn;t doing that.

I can't believe you're supporting lane splitting on the basis that it has higher risk to match the reward.

Yes, some of us ride the shoulder, 'emergency lane' if you're not into the whole brevity thing, but if you follow us in your cage and an emergency vehicle comes up behind us the bike can squeeze into traffic anywhere while a cage can't if traffic is stopped.

sure why not, it;s as legitimate an excuse as "it's too hot" "my bike is gonna overheat" blah blah blah.

when/if lane splitting becomes a law its not going to allow for riding down the emergancy lane.
