I'm trying to understand your thinking. No offense or anything, hehe.
Simple. We are talking about an intersection of two roads. There are four corners, based on the intersection, even tho this one is not perfectly N/S.

You can't say North and West of 6, in relation to the intersection of two streets, can you? So, looking at the + of the intersection of 1960 and 290, where does the Shell sit?

South of 290, West of Hwy 6, is the Shell. (SW of the intersection)
North of 290, west of 1960 is grass.

Chipolte and Starbucks are on the Southeast side of the INTERSECTION of the two roads.

I think you're confusing the location in the picture, as opposed to location from the intersection, on a map.

On the overhead map/picture you linked, Shell is located on the NW side of the PICTURE, but not the intersection of the two roads.

I guess it just depends on how you view it. I don't consider Shell to be on the west side of 6. I consider to be on the north side of 6 and I know that the Shell is further north than the chipotle. I don't consider shell to be on the south side of 290. I consider it to be on the west side and the Shell is west of 290. So it's the most northwest point when talking about absolute compass direction, not the direction of the roads, lol.

Apparently it's relative to how one chooses to view it. If you did a survey of 100 people, my "guess" is that the majority would say it's the NW corner of the intersection of those two roads when looking at a map, hehe.

Good discussion though. I see how you came to your answer.

Physical, actual, map reading location of the Shell is NW of Hwy 6, SW of Hwy 290.

Since the two roads don't run absolute North and South, there is no absolute North and West side of the intersection.

But I learned map reading waaaay back in the Boy Scouts, before there was a "Google".

Tried to make it, but got soaked just east of 45 on the belt. I don't really like to ride soaking wet.

always check the radar before heading out. Most just look at the forecast only. I saw light rain in my area and decided to stay in, 5 mins later it was coming down pretty good.

Let me rephrase, actual, true "map" location of the Shell is WEST of the intersection.

Chipolte/Starbucks is SOUTH.

But that would probably confuse people more, since a lot of people think 290 runs West..

Most people go by the direction designated by whatever freeway is closest. 290W would be an east - west freeway, even though its really northwest. If you look at the big picture, 290 eventually ends up in austin, which is definitely west of houston. Eventually it does go westward.

Austin is "technically" NW of Houston, San Antonio is SW.. both are West but I guess it depends on how you look at directions, and how "big picture" you think. 290 is called the Northwest Freeway, after all.

I am used to driving long distance, and being located on water, so directions are a little more specific to me.

And if someone tells me to "head West", I am thinking take a 270 degree bearing.. which would put me in or about New Braunfels from Houston....

And if you ask me what road goes "West" out of Houston, I'll send you down I-10....

Here's a little info for the day

Did you know that on the Interstate System, all the East/West roads are even numbers, all the North/South are odd numbers....
