Thumbs up Roadside puppy stands could soon be a thing of the past...

9/25/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - Those roadside stands where puppies and kittens are sold could soon be illegal.

The Harris County commissioners court will consider a proposal today which would put a ban on such stands on public property. They're responding to critics who say roadside animal sales encourage overpopulation and irresponsible pet breeding.

If approved, anyone caught selling animals on public property could face up to a $500 fine.

Awesome!

I also hate when I hear/read people say. "hey, wanna breed your male with my female?", or whatever.

I love puppies and puppy breath, but I hate to see so many 'breeders' filling the parking lots on the weekends here in Atascocita.

I can't stand the traffic jam on a Saturday morning because asshats driving slow down to look at the cute little puppies. If you wanna gawk at 'em, go to a pet store or petting zoo.....the roadside is no place for a flea market....I think they should ban those roadside oriental rug guys too, along with the pecan/watermelon selling fools (except in the country of course).

They are really bad around Traders' Village. I always feel like going up there and telling them my piece. I would have no clue why anyone would want to buy a puppy from them. I'd never buy a puppy anyways.

When I was a vet tech, we had a lady who bred Cocker Spaniels and she sold her puppies on the side of the streets near Ft Hood. She didn't care what kind of home they got and the buyers didn't care where the puppies came from. Her were in with infections all the time, muddy from the cheap pens she had and they had all sorts of issues. It was so grosse that the vet rarely made a farm call, he always wanted her to bring in the dogs. She had about 30-40 dogs in kennels.

Good going Harris County. 'bout time.

I thought this was already in effect. I really don't think it will stop the backyard breeders, they will just find another source.

So does everyone think ppl shouldn't be allowed to breed? The petstores are the ones that support the puppy mills.

I don't think just any with a dog should be allowed to breed. Most of em have no idea what the they are doing and when the dogs don't sell, they just let them loose, or worse...

Maybe some kiind of licensing requirements might go well with this law

I dont think you can tell some one your not allowed to breed your dogs, BUT

I do believe you should have a license to sell them.

+ 1. I'd be all for that. The overpopulation is really bad and there needs to be some system.

Don't blame the breeder, blame the buyers. I would never buy any from these roadside breeder. A lot of people don't know anything about a certain breed especially pit bull and goes out to buy one because of rumors that they are the baddest dog.

I actually purchased my Nina from a roadside stand out on Beechnut & hwy 6.

However, the breeder was EXTREMELY thorough, he had both parents out there, so I was able to play with them a little to see if they were approachable/friendly. They were healthy and in very good shape. The puppies were well kept, clean, and plump, and papers were on the spot.

Based on this info and the presentation of himself and the pups, i felt confident in my purchase. I'm not saying it's the end all to buying em, BUT I was comfortable buying from him.
