I think this is being marketed as a stepping stone for younger racers as opposed to the current practice of putting 16 year old on supersport 600 bikes. I'm sure that there will be plenty of adult participation as they will be the ones financing and building these bikes. They gave an indication that the cost of the kit will run close to 10k using a used donor mx bike. With 450s in decent condition going around the 4k mark thats about $6,000 for the rest of the conversion. Still not cheap but pretty affordable considering the amount of money people already put in this hobby.

I agree.....

It looks as a start to faze out the 2-stroke. I think the idea is great. But wasn't it Hopkins start racin at 8 years old? Imagine him kicking our arses at the track with one of these at that age....

I had enough of that in TMGP before they raised the minimum age!

Why? What benefit would you get with the SM as the starting point? If you were to go through with the conversion to full roadracer, you'd still be replacing all the same stuff.

The only exception might be the wheels, but "I" wouldn't use spokes on my roadracer. So throw in a new set of wheels and now everything is the same, except you're down 50cc on everybody else.

oops.

I think these bikes could be built for a whole lot less than "their" prices IMHO.

I think I would like to try this as a project... if I could sneak it past the CFO.

i am thinking the same thing. it really couldn't cost all that much, especially if you buy OEM stuff and modify it to fit. For instance, taking wheels from a 600f2 and mounting them up. that would cut down costs by a $2k, especially when being compared to buying a set of PM wheels made to fit the swingarm and forks.

anyhow, i'd be interested in helping out anyone that takes the plunge until the day I decide to jump into the supermono world.

I am still psyched on this idea and I am pretty sure I will be looking into trying to build one this winter.

I definitely want to do this. If for nothing else, just a fun trackday bike.

oh man what if you took at cr500 or a kx500 and made that a road race bike. 500 cc 2 stroke madness. And I'm hearing they can be had for pretty cheap because people are so afraid of them.......there was a member on this board named dre day that was selling a kx500 for 1500

kx500

4 strokes isn't the point. the point is a dirt bike made into a road racer.

Read my posts in 250 gp racing... then read moody's post with the link on the 450 4-stroke conversion. We were talking about how 250gp 2-stokes are becomming fazed out dude. Thats how this thread came about.

I know your thinking just about dirtbike conversions....... You can build what ever you wish.

These 450 4-stroke conversion looks to be early prototypes of whats to come in the near future for the lightweights. Pretty cool IMO as 4-strokers have more potential towards advantages and benefits over the 125/250gp 2-strokes.
