the JENA 6

Thousands rally in La. to support Jena 6 By MARY FOSTER, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 7 minutes ago

JENA, La. - Traffic jammed the two-lane road leading into the tiny town of Jena early Thursday as thousands of demonstrators gathered in support of six black teens initially charged with attempted murder in the beating of a white classmate.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said it could be the beginning of the 21st century's civil rights movement, one that would challenge disparities in the justice system.

"You cannot have justice meted out based on who you are rather than what you did," Sharpton told CBS's "The Early Show" Thursday.

The six were charged a few months after the local prosecutor declined to charge three white high school students who hung nooses in a tree on their high school grounds. Five of the black teens were initially charged with attempted murder, but that charge was reduced to battery for all but one, who has yet to be arraigned; the sixth teen was charged as a juvenile.

"This is the most blatant example of disparity in the justice system that we've seen," Sharpton said Thursday. "You can't have two standards of justice. We didn't bring race in it, those that hung the nooses brought the race into it."

my response, so when did white kids hanging 3 nooses in a tree automatically mean it was meant towards blacks!?! white people were hung too back then, along with witches and prolly a few spanish people thrown in there too. maybe the kids are saying we should go back to hangings. the white kids did nothing violent towards anybody. Sharpton feels that the black kids are being punished because they are black, not becuase of the crime they committed... BS....give me a break!!!

saw this on the news a few days ago.....

why should they free the "jena 6"? yeah, them lil white kids shouldn't have hung the noose on the tree.....and they should've got more for it. doesn't give someone the right to get hostile and beat the living outta someone.

I think they need to let that little # Mychal Bell out that way he can go out and commit another crime, and show these protesters that he deserves to be behind bars. He is 17 and already has a criminal record. 2 battery convictions, and two for minor offenses. What ever happen to three strikes, life in prison?

the whole thing seems blown out of proportion. those 6 may have been provoked but like everyone said, doesn't give them the right to nearly kill somebody.

Like stated before you need to read a little more.

The 3 strike rule ISN'T mandatory.

I could be wrong, but I think it only is when it's federal crimes.

PLUS he is still a minor.

You can't take race seriously any more it's a freaking joke. Be proud of where you came from. But also know where your at now.

I try not to read too much of this garbage, but it is on every news site that he has a criminal record.

hanging nooses is not a crime, beating someone is. Yes they asked for it when they hung nooses, but that means nothing in court.
