project: dying track leathers

So I got tires of red leathers and got the bug to change them. Did some reading and talking with people at some shops and decided to give it a go. I have ZERO experience with dying leather before this so this was a learning experience. Hey it's a track suit and I don't have sponsors so it doesn't have to look pretty.

Here's the suit before...

Here's after the main coat of leather dye was applied. It had a blackish-blue-chrome kinda look. Looked kinda weird.

At the suggestion of a "professional" I sprayed on top of the dye with an aerosol leather dye, just a light coat and it made it dark shiny black like this...

I suck at taking indoor pictures so excuse the crappy pics but you get the idea. All in all I'm very pleased with the outcome. I've tested it with rubbing, water, scuffing and the dye hasn't come off yet. We'll see how long it lasts.

Thanks guys. The red leather in the perforated holes was really standing out when I only used the initial leather dye. But once I sprayed the aerosol top coat of dye on, it covered it up nicely.

The original dye was mopped on using black "extra staining" Kiwi brand leather dye from wal-mart. Then polished with a brush to make it shiny. Then I sprayed it with Meltonian brand Nu-Life Color Spray. in Black (code 615).

One of my friends in Cali did the same thing - he said everything went great until one race when it started raining - let's just say when he came off the track and took his suit off, everyone was staring at him (used Red color), his whole body was fricken RED!

So i hope what ever you used was of good quality and does'nt go all all you with rain!

red dye coming off on a white boy = walking tomatoe
black dye coming off on Derik = dark and lovely
