Once that light comes on it locks in. THe way to reset it is to reset your comptuer and disconnect the battery of the car and leave it unplugged for about 10 mins.. That should reset whatever made it go off in the first place. If it comes on again then definitely need to see what's causing it to turn on. They may actually pass u if they see nothing wrong on the diagnosis from the computer.

^^^ listen to gianni...

plus... drive the car around 610 for an hour... (you need at least 50 miles on the computer or it will get rejected by the inspection computer for insufficient data)

Re: car inspection question??

My "check engine" light has been on for at least 2 years. Its kind of annoying, but i've gotten use to it. It has never had any problems passing inspection.

I did have the dash off to replace my heater core, and i replaced some lights that had burned out. I should have taken out that Check Engine light then. My truck is a ford, and you have to drop the steering column to get to the gauges. it blows.

I'm going to try disconnecting the battery. I guess I'll have to reset my radio stations.

Re: car inspection question??

true on resetting the radio stations...

resetting the car computer for inspection is pretty common... folks w/bad O2 sensors, mafs, aic valves etc., can save a few bucks and still get their car to pass...

my dad had a ford once upon a time... it's what i did for him...

my mom has a '98 toyota with a bad charcoal filter on the gas tank that triggers the light on hers - i used my diag tool to reset her computer... and she didn't lose her radio stations...*

Re: car inspection question??

LOL one time I went to get my inspection and the diagnosis said that my jeep was runnin on like 2 or 3 cylinders .. I was like yeaaaah riiight. So the inspection guy just reset my computer and it was fine. There was nothing wrong w/my jeep.

autozone doesn't reset, they just read. My dads code says that it's one of the oxygen sensors nad they've been replaced more than once and it keeps coming back

Re: car inspection question??

i use to work at river oaks chrysler/jeep and did driveability (engine performance).

if it was the o2 sensors the OBDII scan tool should read how the upstream and downstream sensors fluctuate. most cases if the engine light is on is because of faulty sensors.

you can reset the computer by disconnecting it for about 10 SECONDS (not minutes) and help it by pumping the brakes a few times while its still disconnected. if the light does not come back on immediately drive for 7 miles (not 50) then its fixed somehow.

if you know what the problem is and fix the sensor, the computer will still clear it by itself after 5 start cycles or 7 miles which ever comes first.

if the sngine light in your dads ford is on and have the code it should be easy to fix. take it to a dealer and not a shade tree shop becasue dealers just cant say, "we cant fix it". the last resort they have is trying on a new computer after all diagnostics have been applied.
