I think it's time ... so I'm just trolling for opinions ... on a new bike

Well, after about 6 months and 4 thousand miles, I think it's time to start contemplating getting a new bike. I now ride an '03 Ninja 250. I love it as a comuter bike, but constantly haveing to keep the RPMs up in the 10-14K range can get tiresome, plus there's no real options for luggage as I really want to start touring with my bike.

And so, here's my short list ...

Ninja 650R
SV 650
and maybe the GSX650

with an inseam of only 28-29 inches I'm pretty limited to how big a bike I want to get ... from a comfort point of view. I don't want to lower my bike. I know that outside of getting a cruiser I'll probably will never be able to flatfoot a bike other than my 250, but I don't want to be way up on my tiptoes either.

So ... what say you all?

Thanks

Are you going to be looking at new or used? Which one of the bikes that you listed do you like the best? Have you actually had the chance to ride one/sit on any of them? how far would you think you would go on one of your "tours, and would you be carrying a passenger? What is your budget?

Looking to buy used if possible.

I have sat on both the SV and the 650r but have not rode either one. The SV did seem a little too tall, though coming from the 250, EVERYTHING is tall. I'm sure I could get used to pretty much anything.

The 650r seemed a little more upright than that SV.

As for my future touring ... I'd like to do one or two day trips. I really don't have the room in the garage for multiple bikes so I need a good do it all bike ... commuter, tourer and possible trackdays.

Right now I'm research mode.

Got a ZZR600 up for sale. Meeting with a guy today though who is interested but if it falls through let me know if you'd be interested. I commute in it. I've seen one at cycle gear b4 all tricked out to be a touring bike. And last but not least I know of a few people that take these to the track.

Do any of the ones named above have good luggage options?

I was checking out twistedthrottle.com and there's some really nice hard luggage options for both the SV and the 650r. The GSX650, being so new, didn't have anything listed, but I;m sure that wont be the case for long.

I like the VFR because it offers hard luggage but it might be too tall for your taste. My inseam is around 29/30.

Since you already have a Ninja, why not try the 650? Or just see on which bike you first get a good deal. When I upgraded from my 250, I had a few on the list and was just waiting for a great deal, which I got! (Twice in a row now actually). Just be patient and keep scanning CL and the forums.
