horse flys take a chunk of your skin. they have what can be described as two knives. they slice and take a chunk of your skin then take it somewhere else to eat it. hurts lik a mother. and can kill a cow an da horse quite quickly.

My horses just get huge bumps from their bites.

Oh, you have to swat them really hard with your hand to kill them; otherwise, they fall to the ground, shake it off and fly off.

Two of my horses actually rub against me or just come to me when they have one sitting on their back or on the side knowing that I will swat the SOB fly for them.

i mmeaning they can kill if they are more than a couple going at the animal over time. cause they take so much blood.

from wikipedia :/:

"The bite from a larger specimen can be painful, especially considering the light, agile, and airborne nature of the fly. Unlike insects which surreptitiously puncture the skin with needle-like organs, horse flies have mandibles like tiny serrated scimitars, which they use to rip and/or slice flesh apart. This causes the blood to seep out as the horsefly licks it up. They may even carve a chunk completely out of the victim, to be digested at its leisure."

"A common problem in some animals, though, when large flies are abundant, is blood loss. Some animals have been known to lose up to 300 ml of blood in a single day, which can severely weaken or even kill them."
