Afterfires/Popping

I've got a 01 SV650 that has a tendancy to pop/afterfire (your choice of wording) while sitting stationary. However, when moving I have never noticed this, but then again I wear earplugs. The exhaust has a small hole in it where it was ground down during a lowslide (not mine). I am thinking that, when stationary the hole is actually sucking air into the exhaust allow the mixture to detonate in the muffler, but when moving this phenomenon is reduced due to the velocity of the air passing around the muffler actually reversing flow of air. The bike doesn't seem to bog at any rpm leading me to believe it's not a jetting problem. Does this seem possible or am I overthinking the problem? Thanks.

sounds like the problem to me...I wouldn't worry too much with it.

Is it popping out of the exhaust or through the carbs?
If it's through the carbs it could be anything from out of synch to a vacuum leak.
