no bike for now!!!!!!!

i went for a little ride today and when i got home and my bike was making a funny noise, i could hear the exhaust shooting out air in weird spurcess(sp), my idle was having trouble keeping itself stable and then i got a niece wiff of gas thru my helmet, i tried starting it back up and it couldnt hold its idle, it jsut kept shuting off so now it wont start, so im thinking i need a new fuel pump, could i be wrong???

carb'd bikes dont use fuel pumps, those are only on fuel injected models. you have a fuel tank that feeds a fuel line through a fuel petcock, which leads to the carb bowls and venturi's in the carburetors.

more than likely the problem is a plug in the fuel system somewhere, like the mesh filter screen in the line coming out of the tank. if you smelled gas that's a pretty good sign that it's fuel system issue. I would pull the tank off and see where the gas is coming out...check the lines and the carb bowls for leaks. there should be a screen in the fuel line coming out of the tank, check that to see if it's plugged.

Re: no bike for now!!!!!!!

Actually a lot of carbed bikes have fuel pumps, early 900rr's and a lot of Yamha's come to mind, but not his F3.
Pull your airbox, make sure the carbs didn't come out of the boots. See if one of the floats are stuck.

Re: no bike for now!!!!!!!

Hmm... wonder if they use fuel pumps because the front end becomes elevated at times on motorcycles?...... Wonder if that is why manufactures have moved to oil pumps in the back of the motor? Weird stuff.... I guess we could talk to our local engineer? right:
