Let me define hysteresis for you

Belts stretch and break.

This is true for a v-twin cruiser. Belts are better for those machines.

In a sport bike this is exactly what they experience. High loads where they stretch, slip, and break.

If you don't believe me ask your local BSME. He can shoot you strait.

BTW, Patrick is a BSME.

I don't know why you would think a toothed belt would slip, if properly adjusted and since thay have no moving parts they have less frictional losses.

Thank you, I know what hysteresis is. Toothed aramid reinforced belts stretch less than a chain when new, and once they have they need little further adjustment for the rest of their lifespan.

The loads you speak of are caused by torque. If you look at the numbers, some of the large displacement cruisers make way more torque than the high RPM sportbikes.

Patrick what DO you say?

The belt is a huge leap forward and the new belts aren't really any appreciable amount wider than a chain. Plus the weight is about 1/4 of a chain. No one reported any slippage or breakage during the press intro rides. NO lube required.
They use belts to drive superchargers on Top fuel dragsters do they not? Talk about high stress

Vmax is way more awesome, esp if Yamaha gets off their butts and releases the new one. I would rather push a dead Vmax than ride a Buell, anyhoo.

With the materials they use now, they often need only 1 or 2 adjustments for the life of the belt which can be as high as 100,000 miles. Under load if they were stretching a lot they wouldn't last so long and would need to be adjusted more.
The only real drawback to belts is they require constant tension and in some applications the movement of the rear suspension causes the tension to change. It seems like Buell has a handle on that so, I think a belt has it all over a chain.
i dont know about you guys but im diggin the yellow street tracker
