Getting a new/old bike as a back up....

I have always wanted an 01 Black/Silver GSXR 1k but never found a clean one. With all the issues I have had with my bike breaking stuff, I decided to get a back up bike. A friend of mine(on another message board actually) has a 2001 Silver/Black Gix 1k, 4382 miles, completely stock aside from a slip on and under tail. Its in about 95% mint condition with only a few scuffs on the RH lower fairing. I couldn't jump at it fast enough and I fed ex'd him a check yesterday. The bike is in Michigan and he is shipping it to me next week.

Anyway here is a quick video he sent me of the scratches etc:
www.boostbysmith.com/Videos/gsxr1000.wmv

I can't wait to get it, I have never had a literbike so it should be a lot of fun.
I will be keeping it completely stock and it will be a good daily rider.

What you guys think about it?

Anything I should know about old (2001) gixxers? any inherent problems?

YEAH thats good to know....LOL Ya I always run them full. I have never seen a bike with bearing damage that was not a result of either running them low on oil, contaminated oil or other types of starvation.

BTW this bike still has the original tires on it. The manufacture dates on them are the 17th and 18th week of 2001. 4400 miles out of a rear tire tells me its been seriously babied. The guy I am buying it from, bought it off of his cousin. The cousin has Crohns disease and could no longer ride. He only put 300 miles on it the last two years. When my buddy got it, it had 3200 miles on it about 2 months ago.

I will have to put fresh tires on it, probably replace the RH lower fairing and pull the stickers off of it(not the factory stickers, the other BS).

I really look forward to getting it. Finally a reliable, smooth running bike that doesn't try to kill me when I get on it.

OH I was not thinking you were bashing what so ever... I appreciate the opinion. I know the old 01/02s are dinosaurs now and most of them have been wadded for years. Plus it seems zuke changed so much stuff on them every two years, I am not sure what all is different for each generation. I have just always wanted the 01 blk/silver, they were rare to see compared to the blue/whites and then the 02red/blacks, even back then. Now you never see them. For all intents and purposes, this is basically a new bike that happens to be 7yrs old. As soon as I could talk my buddy into selling it, I sent the check before he changed his mind. LOL

I know LOTS of riders in Houston had the old 01-02 gixxers back in the day, I am looking for feedback on them, good or bad. I have read that the TPS and SET are the usual electrical/running issues... That and possible weak 2nd gear dogs/forks. Thats just the usual stuff for any bike that gets stunted hard all the time.:eh:

RH lower fairing is $500 shipped...OUCH..>Might wait on that.

Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength-

Man thats good to hear. You know I have played with many busas since 99, and once you get around the early year quirks, they are near bullet proof aside from the shift forks. I am very confident in high mileage(hard mileage I should say) in a busa. But in the 01 1k, knowing it was the first year for that motor, I was a little more worried about them. Thats why I searched for one with the lowest, easiest mileage possible.

Good to see some first year bikes holding.

BTW I bought my busa from Tejas also.

Dude, check the codes when the light is on, its probably either the TPS sensor or the SET(secondary throttle valve controller). From what I have read so far, those are the two main things on 01-02 1ks that trip the light.

BADZX14R, that was a Sport Rider mag I have heard of, I am trying to find it but I don't know what month it was. I would love to read about it. There is something about that mag in another thread here on this board. I need to find it.

Thanks Brett, I found it. The 07 pretty much kills the 01 in peak HP but ....you knew it would, 6 yrs later and updates every two years. They did say the 01 was 30lbs lighter then an 07. Not sure that I believe that but... Main points of interest was that the 01 made more low end and midrange power, and they say it had more throttle response. Their opinion(take it for what it is...rag mag) was that a slightly modded 01 was a better all around street bike then the 07, the 07 is much better on the track. Interesting read though.

The 01 still getting good reviews 6 yrs later is pretty good.
