Clements High School athlete dies after swim meet

A Clements High School athlete died after competing in a swim meet Saturday morning, officials said.

According to a written statement from the Fort Bend Independent School District, the swimmer began experiencing a medical emergency after competing in an event at the Don Cook Natatorium. Staff called 911 and helped the student until paramedics arrived.

The student died after being taken to a local hospital, officials said.

"The loss of a child is an unimaginable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family and friends during this extremely difficult time," district officials said in the statement.

Officials said that crisis teams will be at all FBISD high schools when classes resume Tuesday, but immediate support is being provided to the student's fellow athletes.

The identity of the student was not immediately released.

Stay with KPRC2 and for the latest on this developing story.
