Texans Whitney Mercilus named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL on Wednesday.

Mercilus made four tackles, two sacks, a tackle for a loss and forced a fumble during Houston's 23-14 victory against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

No. 59 also became the third player in Texans history with two sacks on opening weekend, joining the ranks of J.J. Watt and Mario Williams.

Mercilus has recorded the longest multiple-sack streak in the NFL, dating back to week 17 of the 2015 season.

He leads the NFL with 14 sacks in 12 regular season games.

This Sunday, the Texans face the Kansas City Chiefs at NRG Stadium. The game begins at noon.

Mercilus joins KPRC2 every week for Sports Sunday after NBC's Sunday Night Football.
