Yao Ming, Sheryl Swoopes set for Hall of Fame induction

The Houston Rockets and Houston Comets will be represented in the 2016 basketball hall of fame class, with Yao Ming and Sheryl Swoopes set for enshrinement.

Yao Ming was a selection of the international committee and he led his hometown Shanghai Sharks to a CBA Championship in 2002 and was the #1 pick in the NBA Draft the same year.</p> </p> As a member of the Houston Rockets, he earned All-Rookie honors (2003) and was named to the All-NBA Team five times (2004, 2006-2009). As an eight-time NBA All-Star (2003-2009, 2011), he broke the record for most All-Star votes, previously held by Michael Jordan in 2005.</p> </p> As the anchor of the Chinese National Team, Yao was named a three-time FIBA Asian Championship MVP.</p> </p> Swoopes, was a six-time WNBA All-Star (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006), while playing 12 WNBA seasons averaging 15 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.</p> </p> A five-time All-WNBA First Team selection (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005), she was also named Defensive Player of the Year three times (2000, 2002, 2003) and WNBA MVP three times (2000, 2002, 2005).</p> </p> As a member of the Comets, Swoopes won four WNBA Championships (1997-2000). While setting an NCAA championship record for points scored with 47, the Brownfield, Texas native won an NCAA Championship with Texas Tech (1993).</p> </p> Swoopes is a three-time Olympic gold medalist (1996, 2000, 2004) and a member of the WNBA All-Decade Team.</p> </p> Swoopes will be presented to the hall by former Comets head coach Van Chancellor and basketball hall of famer Nancy Lieberman.</p> </p> Yao will be presented by Dikembe Mutombo, Bill Russell and Bill Walton. </p> </p> The Class of 2016 inductees includes ABA superstar Zelmo Beaty, 27-year NBA referee Darell Garretson, 11-time NBA All-Star Allen Iverson, two-time NABC Coach of the Year Tom Izzo, the first African-American coach in a professional league John McLendon, three-time NBA Finals MVP Shaquille O'Neal, Early African American Pioneer Cumberland Posey, iconic Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf, four-time WNBA Champion Sheryl Swoopes and global ambassador of the game Yao Ming</p>
