Daily Craig: Tee it up

Football, even though it's not all that real, starts Sunday. TEXANS AND FORTY NINERS preseason no. 1. In order to get in the proper mood for this I THOUGHT I would spin some old football yarns. Things said by old coaches to their players. Yarns to live by, if you will. Bear Bryant said he didn't care if players quit his team in practice. He didn't want a quitter in a game. Bob Devaney told Nebraska he didn't want to win so many games the NCAA would put them on probation. He did want to win enough to at least warrant an investigation.

The late Alex Karras claimed to have gone to class for 2 terms. Truman's and Eisenhower's. Duffy Daugherity said he would have been a Rhodes scholar "except for my grades". URBAN MEYER said some of his players didn't know the meaning of FEAR. According to their grades "they don't know the meaning of lots of other words". When USC lost 51-0 to Notre Dame, John Mckay said "for those you need a shower, go take one".

Lou HOLTZ is always good for a zinger. "when some guy complains about how the ball bounced, he was most likely the one who dropped it". Then there was Cowboys Legend Walt Garrison. He asked DARRELL ROYAL why he wasn't recruited at UT. Royal said "we looked at you but you weren't any good" Of course, I must mention my school. A former coach said SIU would never cheat. ''You need money to cheat and we don't have any". Here comes football.
