Anyone automate anything with their Raspberry Pi?

I'd like to set up an automated fish tank monitoring system but I haven't a clue how to operate the pinout board on the Pi. Is it similar to a USB?

Right that's the idea, but how do I make the computer do the physical initiating sequence?

I'm going to send you a PM. I've got a buddy who is doing something very similar, though I don't know exactly which computer he's using.

Use an Arduino board instead, there's more straightforward support out there, but either way you'll have to program.

Unfortunately I already own the Pi. It's pretty cool so far. I around with a couple versions of Linux and even tried customizing my own OS using one of the pre-made desktop environments...but in the end I found that it runs faster and on less memory using the rasbian OS.

For $200 whopping dollars you can have a badass controller. It's like your hobby is trying to do things super cheap but you end up spending the same money with way more hassle. Why are you going to all this trouble? I'M TALKING ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES FOR $200. for a fraction of that you could get a syneye and pick the modules you need. Jesus christ man...

Maybe he's looking for a project or something to keep him busy during his annual unemployment period at the end of the year...

Running a 3d printer here at work with a pi but it is running software from Australia so I would be of no help. There should be some free open source firmware available.

Been a rough year already had a week off and maybe another by fall.

Wish I was loaded like toe, but as it stands I will have to take my existing Pi and hook a 5 dollar thermometer up + a 7 dollar water level sensor and save 150 VS doing it toe's way...actually 250 because it's like another 109 + tax if you want to add internet to that thing he mentioned.
